I dont get it...Why did Skinny drop the tape into the toilet???

He was being nice to DJay a second before.

This is pasted from my other response below, but I think it applies here:

a quick note: Skinny didn't "remember" D Jay because he never KNEW D Jay in the first place! The whole thing was a hustle on D Jay's part, and a good one at that, I'll give him.

He bought/brought essentially the best weed he could get his hands on, it looked like an ounce at least, and gave it to Skinny in hopes of getting an "IN". He wanted to hustle him, convince him that he'd once known him, in hopes that he'd accept his (essentially) faux friendship and accept and listen to D Jay's demo tape.

The main thing to realize about this film is that D Jay is a Bad Guy.

Now, I'm not trying to diminish a good movie; it was a good movie, but every movie falls into certain cliches.

The assumption a lot of people seem to have is that D Jay is the Good Guy and that Skinny Black, mentioned from the beginning, and confronted at the climax, and ultimately triumphed over, is the Bad Guy.

Wrong.

D Jay is the Bad Guy. The Good Guy is Nola. She's under D Jay's wing at the beginning, and she comes out on top at the end. She's gone from (according to D Jay, and not disputed by her) turning tricks at a truck stop, to turning tricks for D Jay, and then, like Key said about talking the talk and walking the walk, she went out, walked the walk, and got D Jay's tape played.

I do agree that Skinny Black worked hard to get where he was and that a successful artist is going to have a bunch of nobodies following him around looking for a favor. And yes, D Jay did try to play Skinny Black for selfish gain. But at the same time, Skinny Black has forgotten his roots (Memphis, not D Jay, whom he did not know prior to that night) and is unnecessarily hostile to his first fans (which does include D Jay).

But let us not forget that D Jay sells drugs, exploits young girls for profit, physically abuses women, and violently threw a young woman (and her infant son!!!) out into the street. He is not a good person. He also serves as an antagonist in Key's and Yevette's marriage; had Yevette been a lesser woman, D Jay might have cost Key his marriage (though Key had a hand in it as well).

D Jay does have some good moments, few and far between as they may be, but they are enough to convince some he's the Good Guy. Having to think about things like this is what makes a good movie great.

As for the ending, it doesn't matter what D Jay does with the guards' tape. His own future isn't certain. He hasn't even got a record deal. He was played on the radio a bit. Memphis clearly has an active music scene, so the radio stations would be featuring up and comers all the time. It does not mean that any of them actually make it big. He could also have been shot by Skinny Black and/or his men. The point made by the end, I think, is that Nola changed her life around. Now, I'm sure about the rest of it, but I'm venturing my opinion that the triumph of the movie is Nola becoming In Charge, not D Jay getting on the radio.

If you're still reading, thanks. :)

This scene actually made me LOVE this movie and place it among my all-time favorites simply because it didn't end in full glory. It usually never happens in full glory; most artists have to submit their "demo" or song to multiple people/DJ's/A&R's before they get any serious recognition, so for him to give Skinny a tape and be "on his way" would have been a bit too much of a fairy-tale. Though, I probably would have still liked the movie if that had happened.

Being that I run a music blog myself, if I listened to every artist submission, I wouldn't have time to live my own life. There just isn't enough time in a day, which is why he threw it away. Hell, I bet the real life Ludacris (Chris Bridges) actually has thrown away artist's demo's; probably not 10 minutes after receiving it though, lol.

He probably didn't expect DJay to come in behind him and beat the *beep* out of him. Haha

Skinny just didn't give a *beep* He already felt disrespectful to his roots on top of being drunk on top of being higher than goddamn Sputnik. So he wiped his ass with this struggling little nobody's tape before he tossed it in the toilet. Just for fun.

DXNation, I like your assessment, I think you're completely right about DJ not really being a "good guy", though of course he is such a well written/played character, with such depth and character that we recognize his humanity, though his morality is in no way commendable. One of the greatest characters in movie terms, but certainly one that can be falsely thought of as some sort of hero, when he's really just the main character.

reply

Sorry, DXNathan, misread your name.

Don't forget he was very drunk: we don't know if the tape dropped out accidentally or was thrown into the toilet. Skinny had an ego and wouldn't have cared if he'd ruined a tape. He himself said he didn't have a tape deck any longer to play it on.

yea being nice to a guy that gave u free weed is one thing... letting some stranger get fame of ur hard work. u better give me a lot more weed for that dog. he prob get a demo an hour handed to him.

Skinny was a phony a-hole.

Jefgg,

DJay was the butt hole. He pimped everyone he came in contact with for his own benefit. Just cause Skinny Black doesn't want to listen to the demo doesn't make him bad. Why do people expect that once an artist is successful, they need to bring others up behind them. Also Skinny probably didn't have anyone helping him out on the way up, so he doesn't feel like he owes anything back. Right or wrong, Skinny Black made it on his own and I am sure resents those people who want the easy way by just dropping a demo in his pocket and expect a record deal.

Another thing is that when D Jay handed him a tape, Skinny Black realized he was dealing with a real amateur and he has no time for such nonsense. I am glad D Jay got his dreams pissed on, and hopes he didn't make it.

To the OP -- Skinny never really liked DJ. They were getting high and drunk together and they were kind of kicking it, but Skinny's a punkass, in the end. Throwing the demo in the toilet was his bitchass way of ruining DJ's hopes. If you really follow that scene closely, you can tell how Skinny actually feels about DJ. He loathes the guy. He just pretends to like him because he's a punkass bitch and the conversation is entertaining him. About as much as pissing on the demo entertains him. Skinny's a classic case of someone who makes it famous and then only gives a f--k about himself.

Okay. Now I'm going to do his teeth and cut off his fingers. You might want to leave room.

My thing is, why didn't DJ just have some backup tapes ready, and have a couple of CDs made with his songs on it? It wasn't even worth beating somebody up over one damn tape measely tape----look where it got him. He learned the hard way, apparently, that you're not always gonna get what you want, no matter how well you can smooth-talk someone, plain and simple. And yeah,Skinny was being an a**hole, but hell, he wasn't the only one DJ could have gone to with his music. I really didn't like where the movie went after that---it just seemed a bit contrived to me. However, I get that DJ had put a lot of sweat and tears on his songs, but if he had bothered to find out how to promote his music himself, and not put all his eggs in one basket where this Skinny dude was concerned, thing would have turned out very differently. I will give the film credit for taking a turn I really didn't even expect.

He was an *beep* but I think it had to do with realizing Djay had just been playing him all along. The whole conversation was actually just a pitch to give him his demo, something Skinny was probably sick of after years and years of it. When he got in the toilet he realized how Djay had "pimped" him, and in anger threw the tape in the toilet and pissed on it.
