As is poitned out in the end, every n***** gotta have a dream, but most wannabe rappers are *beep* and there were no reason for Skinny to believe Djay would be.

reply

[deleted]

he probably didnt want any competition and he mightve been pissed at djay for going on with the "move bck home" stuff.

It wouldn't be 20 years, but it would be more than 11 months. He did shoot the guy in self-defense though, so he probably got time for battery on Skinny and plea-bargained down to a lesser crime for the shooting.

Because Skinny was a dick, so why should he help somebody else. He just shined DJ on then tossed the tape as soon as he was alone.

The surprise is the way DJ acted in jail, when the 2 guards asked him to listen to their tape. That is the way a real person acts. Skinny wasn't a person, just a star.

"Friends help you move. Real friends help you move bodies."

reply

I doubt he thought he would compete with him, he didn't even really know him. He had a huge ego, and just didn't care about helping anyone out, or his dream.

reply

[deleted]

Yeah it for sure wasnt competition. He wasnt exactly being an *beep* either. He was trying to be nice as a drunk but every star cant go out of their way to help every stranger. But he got his ego back in the bathroom when he was sobering. It really pissed me off. That was a great scene.

reply

ya he was being a douchebag he was being fake and then when he threw the tape in he told DJ to suck it

reply

not surprised if musicians are like this in real life. they will/might listen to your song, and tell you, you have ''great potential'', but in reality they are 95% of the time just being nice. or if you give them something for them to listen to later, they will most likely never actually listen, and throw it in the trash. and that's the nice way of saying ''you suck, go away'', compared to someone with a bad attitude telling you to *beep* off'' to your face. :P

reply

happens all the time. its called 'networking' thats how memem or M&M was discovered by dropping a 'demo' in Dr Dre's pocket

also those tapes get trashed alot too that's why DJ had to smooze skinny so he would take the time to listen

reply

no eminem is his man, if you listen to slim anus you would no this man

reply

He was being nice to DJay a second before. <***thats the way it is. you come across two faced people all the time in life. people you think are your 'friends" the minute you turn around you have to pull the knife out of your back. especially in the music game.

reply

A lot of people will tell you that Skinny is a dick and a two-face.
Maybe he is. But I see another dimension to it.

Skinny Black worked his ass off to get where he was at.
Selling tapes out the back of his car, working lousy clubs, taking crap from record executives, producers.

Djay took an easy route. Pimping hoes and dealing drugs. This isn't something we need to glorify, as the movie tells you nothing comes from this. It's not a fullfilling life.

Djay while he's not exactly an evil man. He's not a good person, and when he tries to change his life he doesn't exactly do it in a positive way. He lies to his "friends", he still pimps Nola to get a microphone and he tried to 'stroke' Skinny Black into listen to his tape.

So why did Skinny drop the demo into the toilet? It's not because he doesn't want competition. Competition is only good fopr business. Maybe he is a bastard. Maybe like the movie producer who gets a thousand scripts handed to him or has people do impromptu auditions for him all the time, he is just sick of every rapper with a dream come up to him as an easy way to break into the business.
I mean think of it. When you're famous everyone you meet wants something from you, whether it's an autograph or money, or an audition. It's hard to tell who your friends are. Here's a guy whom he connected to, got drunk with, and maybe found a new friend. A real friend and then he hands hime a god damned demo tape? So maybe like Nola, Skinny Black just didn't like getting Pimped by Djay.

Whatever the reason Skinny was pissed because he not only dropped the tape in the toilet, he wrecked it (it was unspooled when DJay fished it out) and he pissed on it.

reply

yer but he tried really hard for a long time to get heard(skinny) so wouldnt he feel like helping him out, so he wouldnt have to go thru the same *beep* that skinny did?

reply

It's kind of funny how so many people in here are condemning Skinny Black for tossing about DJay's cassette demo tape.

I can't imagine how many "demos" music artists get from people they run into. Probably as often as they run into distant family members who need a little money i'm sure. I imagine a person like Skinny, a successful rapper for years, is no stranger to getting these shoved in his face everywhere he goes. Furthermore, he gets a cassette tape, in 2005... put yourself in his perspective. You're in town, at an old friend's bar, and a person you don't know comes up to you, give you drugs, gets drunk with you and then slips you a demo tape, a cassette no less, imagine how amateur-hour that looks... that has to be a frequently recurring circumstance and if I was Skinny, or someone in that position, I'd be pissed about it too.

Was it douchey to throw the tape in the toilet and take a whiz on it? Sure, he could have smiled, walked away, never listened to the tape and not given DJay another though..would have made a better ending in my view, but oh well.

My point is Skinny may be a dick, but DJay is trying to be just as much of a dick by "hustling" somebody he doesn't know.

reply

I think that KortanAskew is dead on with his take on why SkinnyBlack literally pissed on DJ's dream. SB knew that DJ was trying to play him like a Wii. At this point in his career and life, Skinny's heard it all before, and may have even said it to others. Also as previously stated, Skinny worked in the street like a dog to get to where he is, and DJ just tries to break in by handing a tape, not a CD, but a cassette tape. Skinny even told him he couldn't do anything with a cassette tape and that he didn't even have a cassette player, and chided DJ for being behind the times. When Skinny gets the tape, you can tell he's seen clearly through DJ's rouse....the nice clothes, a little bling, and good weed.

However, competition may have been something that SkinnyBlacks was trying to piss on too. He is at the top right now, and doesn't want to bring someone who may eclipse him into the business. Take for instance....

Anyone remember Brenda K. Starr, the pop-singer from the late 80's who was with Sony Music at that time, with a couple Top 40 dance hits? Well one night at a party, she gave the demo tape of her best friend and backup singer to then Sony exec Tommy Mattola. In fact this back up singer was 10x's better than Brenda. So, not only did Sony sign this new talent, BUT the dropped other female acts, including Starr, to focus on this new phenominal talent. This new talent was Mariah Carey. A few years later, when Mariah Carey, a multi-platinum phenomenon, was getting married to Mattola, Brenda K. Star was broke and working in a shopping mall to support her family. So competition may be good for business, but it depends on what end of the business you are on.

Skinny might not have wanted anything similar to happen to him. It's show business...and the word "business" is longer than the word "show"

reply

People don't like getting pimped, and most times, someone especially who's been around showbiz (where all people do is extort and pimp each other) will know when they're getting pimped.

I don't mean they're tricking to make money for a pimp. NO.

Pimping is like persuasive talking. My friend does it all the time. He does it too soo many people, it's pretty much knowing how to talk, what to say and especially WHEN to say it. He can talk some people into doing almost anything.

And he tries to pimp me sometimes, but he only does it to piss me off, cause he knows I hate it, I can always pick up on it, and then get mad, but then he turns it all around. Very clever with the way he talks.

Anyways, not to get too carried away. Skinny knew he was getting sweet talked by DJay and didn't like that, so, he pissed on Djay.

reply

or maybe the guy is just a dick plain and simple...stop trying t justify what skinny did. Did you see the way he came off when DJ introduced himself, the man was a *beep*

reply

I just rewatched this on TV and the same question occurred to me.

The first time I saw this movie, I thought Skinny had possibly dropped the tape because he was too drunk and really like DJ. However, tonight, I realized skinny did it deliberately. Plus, he didn't really remember DJ because he called him by a different name which seemed to upset DJ.

I also think that Skinny was being nice to DJ because he was playing him as well. Just shining him on because he had seen people like DJ too many times.

Another thing I noticed was that Skinny asked how much he owed DJ for the weed instead of asking him to give it to him for free. But when DJ, gave it to him for free, Skinny probably was a bit suspicious. What with the the whole "we miss you" "come home" routine and Skinny didn't even know the guy.

reply

a quick note: Skinny didn't "remember" D Jay because he never KNEW D Jay in the first place! The whole thing was a hustle on D Jay's part, and a good one at that, I'll give him.

He bought/brought essentially the best weed he could get his hands on, it looked like an ounce at least, and gave it to Skinny in hopes of getting an "IN". He wanted to hustle him, convince him that he'd once known him, in hopes that he'd accept his (essentially) faux friendship and accept and listen to D Jay's demo tape.

reply

Erikwm, don't read message boards, they usually have spoilers listed...nobody's fault but yours...Regarding the issue at hand, Djay did what he had to do and Skinny did the same. The name of the game is hustling and nothing comes easy.

reply

i donĀ“t think he did it on purpose. but when djay was all up in his face about it, it was inevitible that he was gonna go back to beinig a dick to him...

reply

i just saw this movies last night
well djay wa lucky skinny even talked to him in the first place and even a drunk nows when hes being used djay was unrespectifull to everyone around him in this movie and immature affcourse he didnt diserve any easy way through the bis if you can see he was eager and hungry
the sad thing is in the comentatry of the movie the producer ?writer said this was how it was for his first movie thsi movei was based on him getting hos first moview out there realy sad

reply

All togetter skinny was a dick and had no brain becuase if He was smart he would have keept the tape and make the song of His own

but the reason he did throw the tape in the toilet was becuase He did not wanna help other becomes star becuase He did think He was the only from the city that was good eong to be a star

reply

I just watched the movie, as you know before Skinny took the tape to the restroom he said "everybody gotta have a dream" then dropped the tape into the toilet. then in jail when the cops give DJay their demo he says "everybody gotta have a dream", so what do you think he did with their tape?

reply

Rappers are approached all of the time with people trying to get their demos to them. I have personally seen some of them walking out of a club or concert and mobs of people either getting autographs or pushing their homemade cd at them. Rappers then take those cds and will listen to about 5% of them. The rest of them probably end up in the garbage or tossed out the window. They have too busy of a life to try to meet everyone's demands. Skinny Black should have thrown it out somewhere else or at least listened to it. Heck homeboy got some free weed outta the deal.

reply

A dude I used to swing with was doing that, trying to get someone to put him on. You know, it's about networking. Anyway, nothing came from it. Also, heck! -- I remember when this group I used to be with gave a tape to Patti Labelle. And as you can see, I'm here typing to you about giving it, while none of you've heard it. Far as that goes, she probably didn't either. Oh well.

reply

interesting that you say this cause my father told me a story about a work buddy of his that gave a tape to patti labelle and stupidly didn't put a name or contact info on it. Song turned out to be : get freaky by silk.

reply

Yeah I thought about that, and I thought it was a good ending because you don't know what's he gonna do with it. I think what this movie is showing is that once you get to be somebody, you change completely. Maybe Skinny was a nice guy and the best friend you could have, but once he got to be a respected rapper, he wanted to keep Memphis in his rear view. I think DJay is following the same path.

reply

When he says everybody gotta have a dream it means the dream is more vivd and important than anything that happens in reality. Skinny black after thinking and talking about things in his past with DJ (like having his car stolen) realises that reality and its lowest points are only second to the flawlessness of dreams and imagination...
Its Skinny Black telling DJ yo dont rely on me or noone else to do nothing for you, do it yourself if your so smart and great.
