What's the ending? (spoiler... duh!)

It just aired on Radio Canada (french CBC). I missed it. I'd just like to know how the plot unravels.
Everyone seems to think the ending is quite good, even though unlikely.
+ Issues involving water interest me.
So, I'm really curious.

Thank you!

Just saw it... on DVD!!

How far were you into it? Well, at the end, the govt is dissolved, an election is called, and then the US comes in, and tells McLaughling that the "political unrest" in Canada is endangering the US, and theyre taking over and setting up a provisional govt until all the issues are worked out. Basically, they take over the country. I'mre more concerned with if this is possible.

reply

I saw it divided into a two part serie. I didn't see the second part. Thanks a lot!

I pray the US will take over
Canada, please let it happen (and I am Canadian) !

We're a lot more patriotic than you let on.

Paradoxically, I feel just the opposite. And I am American. ;)

I think that is possible for the US to do. I remember reading somewhere that in a time of national emergency, American soldiers can freely enter Canada to "help us out".. I assume that's what they were trying to portray. But if I was the prime minister and an American offical (or from any other country) came into my office with two soldiers saying the government was now under his control, I'd probably hit the button that sent the RCMP into the room.

I guess that's why I'll never be Prime Minister...:p

the rest of the world would never tolerate the USA taking over Canada. You think Britain, their strongest ally (at least politically) would allow that...or France or Germany or Russia or China? I dont think so.

You are far two optimistic. Why would they stand up the US with anything more than petty diplomatic protests? What do they have to gain by helping us? Nothing, because Canada contributes little if anything to the international scene (though we like to think that we do.)What do they have to gain by opposing the worlds sole superpower? Nothing. Why England and France let their sons die on Canadian battlefields in a war they'd be sure to lose? And you'd actually want the Communist Chinese to come to our "aid" and occupy our contry when/if they defeat the US? I'd rather be occupied by a liberal democracy, albiet a wayward one, than a totalitarian dictatorship.

reply

Considering the 'liberal democracry' now in power in Iraq, the term is a little misleading in the case of an occupation by foreign military forces in a state ripe with terrorism, torture and martial law, sounds more like a totalitarian setup to me. Anyways, Iraq's not the issue, taking over Canada is, and I know plenty of fellow Canucks that would fight to the end for this country, Albertans might not - :P - but the rest of Canada would definitly care if our southern neighbour came to stir some s*** up.

But lets keep one thing in mind, Who is the only nation who managed to break through the American defenes and burn DC to the ground in the war of 1812?
We are the only nation has been able to do that. And we have never lost a war. If you ever studied World War I. The Canadians did what the British and the French thought impossible take Vimy Ridge from the Germans who have held after every wave. And for my last point when Germany made there last offensive during the last 100 days, They carefuly AVOIDED the Canadain lines. And We had to secertly diverted to the front were Germany had broken through. So I can say even though we are under funded, We can put up one hell of a fight! Oh, and when the French ran from the VERY first gas attack (I forget which battle it was I think it was the 1st or 3rd battle of Ypres) We stood our ground and held or lines. The American Army would just be one more power we would have to kick in the nuts!

Sorry sum but it was British troops retaliating for the burning of Port Dover as well as Niagara (present day Niagara on the Lake) as well as tit-for-tat burning of the First Parliament buildings in York (Toronto). And the U.S. forces in the Washington area weren't any screaming great hell as defenders. Fort McHenry in Baltimore was a different story.

Hate to burst your bubble.

reply

Oh and about you Albertans might not.... I know the 41st brigade who is mostly alberatns because i know one of the commanders personaly, He told me he and his men/women under his comand would die before they let any forign power take over. They fight to very last man. "GIVE 'EM HELL 41st Brigade!"

"Nothing, because Canada contributes little if anything to the international scene (though we like to think that we do.)"

You idiot, Canada invented UN Peacekeeping, Medicare and plus our troops won the first World War. And to who ever made that Albertan's crack, let he inform you that I'am an Albertan, from Calgary and I'm in the Royal Canadian Army Reserve, I fight to the death against the Yankee's or anyone else who would try to take over my beloved country the Best Country in the World.

I was in it, read the whole script, watched it on tv, still don't understand what the hell it was about!

Paul Gross was a nice guy in real life, though.

Are you Jamie Douglas who played Dirk?

In any case. Simple plot really.

Conspiracy of international bigwigs who believe that borders are meaningless, especially for countries that are not nationalistic. As an experiment, Canada is used. McLaughlin jr volunteers, waits until the moment arrives (in this case dad dying) and he uses the funeral to get public attention, gets elected MP in a by-election, get elected party leader (and de facto PM) and tries to get as much done in 6 months, which is to have Canada become an autonomous region of the United States.

Plot unravels as rogue Canadian Police Force Sgt finds the murder, the former deputy PM and now Solicitor General finds the conspiracy, and an incredibly resourceful hitman changes sides from bigwigs to PM.

The Emergency Powers Act (War Measures Act or state of emergency) is used by both antagonists and protagonists for their own gains.

And here comes the spoiler . . .

Just as McLaughlin jr gets everyone playing off each other, causing chaos, the US step in with a UN Security Council mandate to take over Canada. Because McLaughlin is stretched thin, he already has US troops in place, but instead of being under his control, the US troops take over Canada, ending his dream of being an autonomous region within the US for it has become a colony of the United States.

He most likely still is. As far as I know he's still drawing breath. :)
