Thoughts on the political stuff... [spoilers]

Just some thoughts on how many things Gross touched on, and how well he did it:

Justin Trudeau: When he gave his "heartrending" speech at dad's funeral, and later said he had no interest in politics, I wondered... Good to see (a) at least Paul Gross agrees with me, and (b) I'm going to be proven right soon enough.

October Crisis: Nice seeing the "just watch me" reference, and then the Act. Also, fun to see opposition to it on the news.

Gordon Pinsent = Peter Mansbridge. 'Nuff said.

NAFTA / Mulroney. Yeah, we knew it was coming... This was "fiction," but just wait until Harper comes into power...

Nice reference to Alaska Boundary and IJC.

Also, what was it, "Bernard Holmes"? (Can't remember the name) But, there are enough "world leaders" clubs like that, I'm suspicious too.

Burnwood Institute. Yes, there is just such an organization, the "Bilderberg Group", that is being watched carefully by a lot of people right now.

Other things that were based on actual events:

-- Trudeau's fondness for wilderness canoe trips.
-- His relationship with Deborah Coyne, the constitutional lawyer.
-- Similarity between Margaret & Julia.
-- Aline Chrétien's defense of her person with a sculpture (Marie Lavigne answering the door).

This movie scared the hell out of me because I'm one of those people who look at 12 sides to things that only have 6. I'm suspicious of everyone and everything, always looking for the ulterior motive in people's actions. Not an easy person to live with.

Although after reading the very first post on the IMDB page, I had to laugh. Firstly, the US has a Black President now. That pretty much sets the tone, eh?

Secondly - on paper, the Canadian Prime Minister actually has more power (within our government)than the US President has in his (government). That is a fact.

Thirdly - This movie is loosely based on what is actually happening in British Columbia - Huge multi-national organizations are slowly working the Provincial Government into grants of huge tracts of land that they will one day dam, forcing all the water south into the USA. If you don't believe me, take a drive to southern BC and ask the local inhabitants if they know what is going on with their water situation. They will gladly sit down with you and fill you in on how the US is working on "acquiring" our water - all nice and legally...

Finally, I realize that this is a Canadian Movie - we just don't have the expertise that Hollywood has because of the Brain-drain due south, however, there is nothing wrong with watching a Canadian Movie - not every movie can be a Star Wars or Die Hard blockbuster.

JMHO.
