Blame the contrived and totally unnecessary romantic subplot, not the character; she was prettu interesting in the first film. Trying to hook her up with Anton instead of focusing on her powers and role as one of the chosen was a disservice to both the character and the main arc. Actually, both Svetlana and Anton's son become unbearably annoying in this sequel, what with the script having them circling Anton all the time but doing little if anything to further developed their relationships - it felt like they were merely gaining time to delay the final showdown, characterization be damned.
