Why so many haters?

While perusing these forums I've noticed several hate threads for this movie. The no. 1 complaint? I didn't understand what was going on.

Listen haters! Just because your too dumb to understand the film or too dumb to watch Nightwatch before attempting Daywatch, doesn't mean the film isn't good. My wife is dumb as a rock and she didn't have any trouble following this! My former roomate is soft in the head after being a drunk for 20 years but he followed the plot just fine.

Maybe you might feel more at home with Disaster movie or Epic Movie if this is too hard for you too understand?

Adios idiots!

You are so right on this...

it is uneccesarily convoluted, though. the first one is a lot better and would have worked just fine without a cliche ridden sequel about people chasing a deus ex machina.

Right on.

Day Watch was the combination of the last two stories in the Night Watch book. I agree that they should completely redo the entire series making each story into its own movie from all four books with the origianal cast. That would be three for the first two books, two for the third book, and I don't know how many for the four book yet...ok so you got me. I just want more watch movies with my fav characters. They are great stories and great characters.

Ive not read the books but I got the feeling that they tried to cram too many sub plots into the second movie whereas they kept the firt one fairly simple.
At first I though they may have decided to combine the second and third movies together but I now know this isnt true.
It would appear they added the stuff left out from the first book into the second movie.
For this reason I prefer the first movie they could easily have left out 30 mins in the second movie and dealt with the bigger plots and issues.
Compared to the normal same old film these two are very good and enjoyble.
I liked them for what they were and I look forward to the third, I have no idea what direction it will go, dont tell me no spoilers please

Actually, the Night and Day Watch movies are both from the Night Watch book. The book itself was divided into three stories, if my memory serves me correctly.

Much as I loved Day Watch, I have to agree that there was a lot going on and it was too long.

This is one of the most underrated movies on imdb... It deserves a place in top250, it's no worse than Dark Knight.

reply

Heh.

You know, the more I think about it, you may actually have a point. Personally, I'm one of what seems like 1% of the human population that wasn't blown away by The Dark Knight as a film. I think it is quite arguably the most overrated film ever greenlighted by Hollywood.

I don't know about the Top 250, but if a film like TDK can receive 9.0/10 stars on the imdb, I see no reason why a film like this one and its predecessor shouldn't be at least rated higher than they are now.

Batman Begins had an $150 million budget with an additional $100 million in marketing cost and The Dark Knight had an $185 million budget and the single most brain assaulting marketing campaign ever which I'm sure cost insane amounts of money for WB.

On the other hand, both Night Watch and Day Watch reportedly had budgets less than $5 million and still managed to at least be on some level comparable to both of Nolan's Batman films from the perspective of direction and editing, didn't dumb-down everything in the script as if the audience was stupid like TDK did, and was more complex and consistent from a film perspective than BB or TDK.

As it is now, these movies obviously have a cult following. It would be interesting if someone were to remake these films here in the U.S. to see how they would be done and to see how successful they would be. Just a thought.

The Dark Knight is a vastly over-rated film.

As the OP suggests many people (Including myself) who watched 'Day Watch' didn't watch 'Night Watch' first, hence they didn't understand what are/were the relationships between the many characters from this movie nor their motivations, leading them to think that 'Day Watch' was just another piece of trash 'a la Hollywood' with lots of style but zero substance.
I rented 'Day Watch' first and while I was blown-away by Timur's visual style, at the end of the movie I was quite confused about what the hell I just saw. Then I realized that this film follows "Night Watch". So I decided to rent Night Watch and Day Watch (again). Watched them in order. And while the story is still a bit messy, the movie experience was much, much better this time.

Besides, Bekmambetov's style is not for everyone. Seems that people either love him or hate him (his visual style, I mean).
Personally I haven't decided yet if Timur is a visionary or just the russian answer to Michael Bay. Albeit Timur's movies are way more original than any of Bay's generic action flicks.
I'll give the benefit of the doubt to Mr. Bekmambetov since all the movies directed by him that I've already seen (Night Watch, Day Watch, and Wanted) have been, at least, a unique and wonderful visual experience.

I'm looking forward to see Twilight Watch.

I didn't watch Night Watch but here are some reasons why I wasn't really impressed by Day Watch.

1) A good sequel movie, while building on its predecessor, should not be completely incomprehensible as a stand alone movie. I can give you innumerable examples of movies that you can understand without watching the previous one. Matrix reloaded. The Empire Strikes Back. Two Towers. The Dark Knight. Spiderman 2. Terminator 2. Etc.

2) The movie was long and convoluted to my mind. It tried to do too much, follow too many characters.

3) The acting was okay, nothing special in the least. At times I thought it was kind of bad, and I'm a native Russian speaker...

4) Parts of it seemed kind of cliche, though I suppose that's more of a criticism of the books than it is of the movies. Chalk of fate? Great other? I had a hard time not rolling my eyes at those.

5) Other parts were really random or just didn't make that much sense. Why would the people guarding the chalk of fate build this great walled fortress if horsemen could just crash through it? Makes walls kind of pointless, doesn't it? That Uncle Evil dude guy told Egor he didn't want to kill the great other girl (forget her name) yet he was perfectly fine with Egor's suggestion of sucking the life out of her until she (presumably) died. Then that yo-yo ball thing that Egor threw thing that killed darks and lights and leveled half the city and somehow only blinded the girl? Like, seriously? And don't get me started on the ending. My head almost exploded.

6) I felt a lot of the visual effects were flashy for the sake of being flashy.

I'll probably rent Night Watch sometime but to be honest my expectations aren't terribly high.

Matrix Reloaded?

And with that, I stopped reading because you just demonstrated you have poor opinions.

I liked them. Blink and you miss it, it certainly made me pay attention. But if we all liked the same films - the movie industry would be a pretty boring treadmill.
Haters - go post on a film you liked instead of winding people up, your opinions are respected if not matched by everyone. I would love to go on many film pages and rant about how i didn't like it, instead I use my life to find out more about the films I actually do!

I understand the movie and still dislike it. It's boring, unimaginative, poorly acted, poorly scripted, and poorly directed, in my opinion. And, as I said at the DC critics screening, if this was an American movie, a good number of those who enjoyed the movie would find it to be a hot mess, in my opinion.

I find that all too often foreign films are given a free pass by their fans -- bad writing, acting, directing, et cetera is excused on cultural bases, and people who find the writing, acting, directing, et cetera of what they consider bad foreign films bad are all too often accused of stupidity, cultural bias, or an inability to appreciate good acting, etc., because of the language barrier.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but, in my case, that's not the case, I do not believe. I love the writing, acting, directing, etc., in films like Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, Amelie, Seven Samurai, and Kontrol. These qualities transcend cultural and linguistic barriers and are handled marvelously in those films. They are not in Nightwatch and Daywatch, in my opinion, and that is why I say they are terrible movies. It has nothing to do with stupidity, bias, or inability to appreciate foreign forms of entertainment with me -- I firmly believe that.

Just because you like the movie, it doesn't mean it's good! I started to like it but found it too long and complexified (too many subplots, things that had not been clarified, faulty characterization, etc.). Have more respect for other people (starting with your wife!), keep an open mind to the fact that they might not have the same opinion as you, and do yourself a favour: don't criticize people you don't know if not for a good reason (and having a different opinion is NOT a good reason). It's not because you can follow a movie, you can be considered clever, and vice versa. I found it hard to follow it sometimes. I even fell asleep a few times, so it took me 4 or 5 attempts to see it through to the end. Yes, I did watch "Nightwatch" and the same thing happened. And, as a teacher and writer fluent in 3 languages and understanding another 2, I'm not what YOU would call dumb. So, to those who found the movies bad, stick to your guns. It's your right to hate a movie YOU think is bad! To those who liked it, good for you!
I liked the editing, the sound mixing, the visual effects...but as for the script, it could have been better, especially in terms of narrative units and characters.
FYI: "your" should actually be "you're".
