Since I am very new to Korean movies. . . yes, I'm late again for the post. No one will reply to me at this rate. Ha! Anyway, the owner of the Korean movie store "made" me watch this. She said it's a true story and not even Koreans know about this female pilot.

She was born in 1909 if I remember correctly. As a little child she wanted to go to school but her father didn't let her because she's a woman. Then he beats her up just becuase she said she wants to go to school. It was sad. Then we see her in Japan all grown up. I wondered how she got there and became a student of a flight academy? For some reason, the director decided to skip this part.

I realize that it was Japan that ruled Korea at that time, but the first half of the movie doesn't really show it. I saw Koreans working in Japan without any racial discrimination. As I began to wonder howcome the political issuses are not present in the movie, yes, it comes in. Although mildy portrayed, there was political pressure and unfairness against Koreans in Japan, and the Korean female pilot doesn't get Koreans' support either just because she flies Japanese plane and for that, she's branded a traitor. This freaking web of politics and people being tortured made me so aggrevated! When the female pilot's not sure if she should have a long distance flight with Japanese flag and torn between her dream and her loyalty to her country, her jailed boyfriend (also Korean) says "do what you want to do. What did Korea do for you anyway?" It was a classic moment of genius being neglected by his/her own country and people, then recognized by another country, then his/her own people saying "traitor!"

This movie was a little too slow for my taste, but the photography is awesome. I don't know why but the flight scenes felt quite different from those of Hollywood made flight movies. I can't figure out why though. Is it a camera angle? Different CG technic? I came to this board in the hope of finding someone who has the answer, but it seems like I'll be talking alone here.

Yeah the flight scenes felt somewhat different than hollywood movies, i was expecting something like in pearl harbor, instead i got something else -__-
I think its cause most of the shots are actually real... The only CG is when you see the actors piloting.

Whoa!!! Are you seriously saying those flight scenes were real plane flying? That is way cool, dude. Which cost more though? CG or real flying?

Not only this is not the best Korean movie of 2005, it also flopped badly in box office. To be honest, Blue Swallow is not a bad film. In fact, I found the story to be reasonably engaging. The poor box office performance can be attributed to the controversy around the character Park Kyong-Won.

I can understand why the real Park Kyong-Won’s pro-Japanese activities draw so much criticism from Korean moviegoers. The writer and director are insensitive when handling a story in such historical context. It does not help the movie mistakenly claimed Park as the first female Korean pilot. The real irony is that the first Korean female pilot turned out to be Kwon Ki-Ok, who joined the Chinese air force to fight against Japan.

I tend to think that any Korean movie that's sufficiently different or interesting to appeal to a foreign viewer with anything other than Hollywood tastes is bound to flop in the Korean cinema market. It's not 100% true -- The Host and Old Boy did okay here -- but many of my favorite Korean films have done badly here. In fact, I helped some student reporters at work write an essay about this very dynamic, which they themselves had ignored. Films they mentioned included "Take Care of my Cat" and "Save the Green Planet!"
