Showing the 18-minute short CASHBACK at high school got me fired

Six years ago I chose to show a number of Academy Award nominated shorts to my high school Core Arts class. I'm a teacher with over forty years experience teaching. I was teaching at an elite girls' school in "progressive" California. Before screening CASHBACK (2004) I prepared my students both with a discussion of the "male gaze" and told them there would be some female nudity.
We talked it over after the screening. Mixed responses.

A few days later the Head of School fired me without any discussion. She labeled the film "porn" and even though I'd served over 20 years at this school with distinction, I was dismissed in the middle of the first semester. At age sixty. And now, six years later, after I applied to teach at top schools throughout the country, Head of School had effectively ended my teaching career.

Meanwhile, teachers show GLADIATOR to 6th graders, giving them nightmares. Bloody killings are fine for 11-year-olds, but seeing a naked woman in a film with a classroom of high school girls is so reprehensible that a sterling teaching career had to be ended. The hypocrisy. See whereisbear.org for backstory.

I am so sorry you had to go through this.
Horrible overreaction.
