the drawings?

When Chris is rummaging through the captain's drawers, he finds a series of pencil drawings - a few of a man's face becoming increasingly deformed, and ending with a picture of himself holding the penknife (that he uses as a razor to shave the captain).

Any thoughts of their significance?

I wonder if the final picture is supposed to be Chris or the captain's son? I would guess Chris, because its lightness suggested it was drawn much more recently than the others.

There was one line the captain said that reminded me of the drawings. He said something to the effect of: "When men are scared, they change." It made me wonder if the film was going to go a supernatural route and actually show men turning into monsters, like the drawings show.

The drawings were by someone who was tortured and lost their soul. The newest drawing of Chris shows that he should be alarmed that he has inexplicably come to such fixation of the crazy captain.
