I liked Texhnolyze and Elfen Lied, and though paranoia agent was pretty average, although it was the first amine series I really watched. Can anyone recommend something similar to Texhnolyze, given I have Serial Experiments Lain, to watch next.

Many Thanks
Josh.

Ergo Proxy, very atmospheric.

Egro Proxy, Gantz, Paranoia Agent, Gilogamesh would be my first recommendations.

there are very very few things like Texhnolyze tbh... the subject matter varies, but if it's really good writing you're after:

Gantz
The Twelve Kingdoms (unrelated)
Ghost in the Shell (all of them)
Casshern Sins
Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita in the states)
Zegapain (this one is surprisingly good for giant robots)
RaXephon (like NGE but not nearly as pretentious)
Shangri-La
Eureka Seven
Monster (unrelated)
Moryo no Hako (unrelated)
Last Exile (far superior to Ergo Proxy imo)
Noein

i'd recommend checking out the 'post apocalyptic' tag over at bakaBT:

too many titles to name tbh, do a bit of digging and take the AniDB/ANN median weighted ratings to heart when looking for new stuff.

speaking of which, ANN thinks you should watch these:

personally i don't think 'Darker Than Black' holds a candle to this though.

Ergo Proxy is stylish but the story is pretty weak.

Speed Grapher has fansubbing issues, but it's a good show nonetheless.

Thanks for all your recommendations, I suspected that might be the case. I haven't seen much amine, seems like I fell onto a few gems, I'm not really interested in the crazy fighting scenes. I'd rather watch... well a bit of a head *beep*, with a good story line.

Angels Egg is a great comparison to Texhnolyze. AG has excellent atmosphere and filled to the brim with symbolism. Its definitely a mindf@ck. Every person has a different interpretation on what the film is about. Great stuff.

Yeah, i had seen angel's egg not so long time ago, defenitly mamoru oshii's best.
Another work of oshii (besides ghost in the shell that everybody saw) you might want to try is twilight q, it was supposed to be a compilation of various anime directors, but in the end it was only some director who directed the first episode and oshii who directed the superior ep 2. Also, some people say wolf's rain is similar to texhnolyze. Besides oshii had made many interesting films, like this film in 1992 which name i had forgotten, and not to mention skycrawlers, and the first documentary in anime about the legendary samurai musashi miyamoto. Also the trio that created texhnolyze is yasuyuki ueda and yoshitoshi abe and screenwriter chiaki konaka, they had another works like haibane renmei (which you saw) and niea 7 (the only one i havn't seen) and serial experiments lain, which is more psychological stuff than texhnolyze (but texhnolyze is better) had you seen it?

Wait, there are more, like "ghost hound" which is what lain was if it was spiritual. And if you like fantasy there are mainly two masterpieces, one is "twelve kingdoms" and the other is "moribito- guardian of the spirit" which has the most beautiful and amazing animation i saw in my life. Interested to hear you back!

Serial experiments lain was good, I never watched the last episode though. I got put off by the monster, and sided tracked in general. In a way it was fantastic, kept me intrigued about her and the story. However somehow it felt like it was trying really hard; if that makes sense to make a subject more of a *beep* than it was.
Picked up samurai champloo recently which I'm enjoying, sounds pretty stupid because it's quite light hearted with lots of fighting and it's not much of psychological thriller, but I am a pretty big fan of hip hop music. I love the settings and scenery, feels authentically japanese.

On the contrast Haibane ranmei was the complete opposite, I did like Reki (the chain smoking girl) I wasn't really interested in the insecure little girl to put it bluntly. The setting was a mismatch of modern and old, which is ok, but I don't think it worked.

I'll check out angels egg though, that sounds good. I think the pace of texhonylze was perfect, which induced the right atmostphere, and gave you time to appreciate the post apocolptic scenery which was drawn beautifully with plenty of interesting characters and personalities. Although I have heard it being critised of being 'lazyly drawn' I didn't think so.

It's ugly, like look at you! It's a damn shame

Granted, I've only seen the first half of Ghost Hound so far but I found it to be excellent. Also, Serial Experiments Lain was very good but I thought there should've had more animated movement in some scenes.
Have you tried Baccono!? It's like a bloody, more adult version of Full Metal Alchemist if it were set in the Depression Era.

Is cowboy bebop as good as the reviews make out? Or is it a cult thing?

cowboy bebop is black lagoon in space =P

it's over-hyped because of it's popularity in the states, but it's a good show nonetheless. don't expect a sweeping epic, the story is broken up into lots of sub-plots much like Stand Alone Complex.

ditto NRTOOD's sentiments btw, agree with all of that. though i didn't think Serei no Moribito was that great =P
