I do not know if you know this but this is from the creators of lain and haibane and niea 7 (yoshitoshi abe and yasuyuki ueda and sometimes screenwriter chiaki konaka) so be sure there is a story. But if you are going to watch this be sure you are ready for the slowness of this. Because if you thought lain was slow this is more slow (7 first episodes are more of an intreduction. And most people could not stand the first episode which there is almost no talk). And yes, this is dark but not as lain, more as a mechanical side ofscience fiction. If you would succeed and watch until the second part of the series you would be rewarded with one of the most hellish and saddning endings in anime ever. This is one of the more mature animes around. So if you liked lain and haibane and you can stand visual storytelling (there is symbolism found in almost every hole) you must watch this too as this is the lain theme best project yet.

And if you are not in any case like this project you can always try the screenwriter and director of lain and shirow masamune (ghost in the shell manga) last project "Ghost Hound". Which is like lain but with nature like spirituality.

Good Luck.

I had no problem with the first episode. What almost turned me away from the series was the intensity of Ichise's situation and how freakin' long it took him to accept who he was. Yes, the first 7 or so episodes are a long introduction but I'd argue that Texhnolyze is a far darker series than Serial Experiments Lain (which was itself pretty sombre).

Ultimatley texhnolyze is more massive so your'e probably right.

If you like a GREAT story, then look no further. Texhnloyze isn't nearly as approachable as Lain or Haibane and it's difficult to get started, but it's SO worth it.
