Original, Uncut DVD version

Does anybody know where I can find a DVD version of Into the West that is uncut and resembles the original episodes that aired on TV? I found a website offering the 6-dvd package, as opposed to the TNT issued 4-dvd package, but I fear that the man offering the 6 pack is simply a bootlegger, and i have been very unhappy with the quality of bootlegs that i have received on the internet in the past. I have heard someone refer to an official uncut "emmy" version, but i cannot find it.

I would really appreciate if someone could let me know where to find the true "12 hour, uncut" version of Into the West. Thanks!

I got mine from Amazon.com. It was the 4 disk set. I've heard of DVDs that were censored, etc. but when I compared my DVD set to the tapes I made when it was showing on TNT I could find no differences so you may want to give them a try.

Amazon say their version is 'edited for classroom usage' or some such nonsense.

In my schooldays we watched Gallipoli in history class and Polanski's Macbeth in English and didn't grow up traumatised. How the heck can you hold a bunch of kids' attentions if there's no shocking violence that's what I want to know...

I'm wondering if they haven't changed the DVD set since I bought it. I bought it as soon as it came out in October 2005 and nothing from the series was deleted. The Amazon site advertises 4 discs which is what I have. However I do see comments from some people complaining that they got a shortened, censored version. Based on my experience I was puzzled by this. However last week a co-worker's husband purchased a DVD set at Best Buy and he was livid to find out that he had a 3 disc version that left a LOT out. I don't know what's going on but since this aired on basic cable I don't see why it would need to be censored for classroom discussion. If anything they were extremely judicious and restrained when it came to the use of violence. I'm glad I got mine when I did.

I got mine from Doubleday Books & Music (Australia) when it was released this year in February - It has four disks (two episodes per disc), the fourth being bonus stuff - interviews etc etc. I haven't noticed anything different than from what was shown on showtime last year.

If anyone in Australia hasn't seen it it's back on showtime this month (May)

Hello bittybell-1, I work for Best Buy in Florida and I'm very curious
regarding your co-worker's spouse having bought a 3 disc dvd set of
"Into The West." I've been at my location since August 2005 and the
TNT mini series was released in October of that year. And I can tell
you that without a doubt my store has offered only the 4 disc set.
From which Best Buy was this 3 disc set purchased? I'd really like
to know.

Hi Lorenzo. I talked with my friend at work. After explaining how there should be 4 disks with the first 3 being episodes and the 4th disk being special features they re-checked their set and found that there were indeed 4 disks. I also explained that each disk had 2 eps and when they (this time carefully) checked the menu screen they found that this was the case. So they did indeed get the 4 disk set from Best Buy (in Ohio). I'm not sure how they got confused in the first place. I guess this is how rumors get started. As I've stated before I can't see why there would be a need for a "censored version for the classroom" since I think they were extremely tasteful in dealing with the subject matter -after all it was designed for basic cable. Thanks for asking!

Hello bittybell-1 and thank you for the response and for clearing up
the confusion. I intend to buy "Into The West" and look forward to
watching the entire mini-series. Over at my Best Buy store one of
our Geek Squad agents named Chuck is of Lakota indian background.
He has never watched the series and he'll want to borrow it from me.
By the way, the Lakotas lived primarily in North & South Dakota
and Chuck hails from S. Dakota along with the rest of his family.
Take care.

6 dvd package

In Amazon are 4.

wtf is going on ?
why this difference?
Please, I need to know too !!!!

reply

I've never heard of a 6 disk package. It could've been promotional set for VIPs but personally I'd be suspicious. If you get a 4 disc set that hasn't been "edited for the classroom" you should be OK since the 4 disc set has all 6 eps (2 eps per disc) and extra features on the fourth disc.

I got mine free from Demonoid - all 12 episodes:

Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit shooting smack...

those are home made dvds

That is a BOOTLEG version.

I have looked everywhere and there is no OFFICIAL 6 disc version. Wikipedia mentions it, but I can say my grandmother is a purple flying hippo and it will be posted on Wiki.

So where does that leave us?

I got the 4 disc version at Walmart the day it was released. I don't remember anything missing, but perhaps I am wrong. Its hard to say. All I know is, I have yet to see any conclusive evidence there is a real 6 disc set out there. I think someone got confused with the words "6 episodes" and "6 discs" and it ballooned from there.

Thanks for that...

I found a review that explains all the cuts that were made. I got the "VIP" edition on Ebay. Best I remember it had 6 discs.

reply

I just rented mine from blockbuster video. There are three discs with two episodes on each disc (that equals 6 episodes). Each episode is roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes, give or take a few. It seems to be the whole thing.

You got a bootleg then. There is no such thing as a VIP edition. Post some pictures if you like and I will point out how to spot a bootleg

Okay, I had these same troubles (concerns) when the DVD originally came out and spent a considerable amount of time going through this looking for an answer. So I'm going to attempt to help everyone here out with an explanation of the different versions. First and foremost, yes, the copy that 99% of us on here either have or have seen for sale in stores, amazon, etc is censored. How much I cannot solidly say, but within a close estimate, I'd go roughly 1-2 minutes. The (stated) running time for the original series is 552 minutes, and this set comes in at 9 hours, 12 minutes, or 552 minutes also. So in that respect, they are supposedly identical in running time, meaning the cuts are few and far. The only stated cut(s) I can personally commit to noticing is the Wounded Knee Massacre.

That being said, on to the actual versions everyone is curious about. As stated, there are two different versions, a four disk (three disks of episodes) version, and a six disk Emmy consideration version. Due to the latter existing, the B.S. hoax bootlegger site tvaddicts.tv has made a "garbage" version of six disks, which is often mistaken for being the rare six disk version. It is not but a bootleg of the recorded episodes. It has no features or subtitles, sub-par audio, incorrect viewing ratio, comes in regular separate plastic cases, and is on DVD-R's. The real six disk version however, was created solely for Emmy award consideration. It was never packaged to be sold in retail, nor can it be found as such.

Unfortunately though, this six disk Emmy version decimates and destroys the four disk version, most of us have, in every aspect. It comes in a large book-like leather folder and is gorgeously designed. It is, of course, uncut and shows identical to the original aired version. Each episode is on its own separate disk but there is no bonus disk. In addition, this set comes with a massive 90 page hardcover book detailing the making of the series, examining each episode individually, and includes stunning stills and pictures. Truly it is a sad thing, as I would have gladly paid twenty dollars more for such an extravagant and untouched version.

Here are links to the different versions for comparing:

As you can see from the eBay auction, it is very real and very genuine, 100% legit and a total let-down that we can't buy it normally.

-For now we see in a mirror, darkly; but then shall I know even as also I was known-

Thanks for the info! So it looks like there was very little difference (only 2 minutes) if that between what was aired and what's on the DVD. Which would be very difficult to detect (2 minutes out of 552 is literally a needle in a haystack unless it was a favorite scene that you have memorized). The 6 disc set does look nice. As for the episodes it sounds like it's pretty close to the 4 disc set, the main difference being each episode gets its own disc. Considering how these companies are always looking for ways to make more money I'm surprised they don't release it now that 4 disc set has probably sold to all of the hardcore fandom. We hardcore fans would gladly pay as you say an extra $20 for this set even if we have the original. That 96 page book sounds fascinating.

How is the dvd set edited from the original version aired on TNT

Here is what a reviewer wrote in AMAZON:

Sanitized Vignettes - NOT the same version shown on TV, November 29, 2005
By Andrew Freborg (Stow, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews

I am reposting a review, as my previous review was deleted - AMAZON must use the same censors as TNT. This is NOT the same version seen on TV -- much has been removed to facilitate "classroom viewing." The TYPICAL practice is to included ADDITIONAL footage in a DVD release because the DVD doesn't have to cater to TV advertising time and audiences with short attention spans. The DVD customer wants a good film - didn't TNT ever hear of "Extended Versions?" Not only does this DVD NOT contain additional footage - footage aired in the original TNT TV broadcast has been censored. Its even more choppy than the TV version! Gone is Sitting Bull's sundance prior to the Little Bighorn - with associated deep native perspectives. The Wounded Knee footage is also heavily edited from the much more powerful version shown on TNT. Sanitized. The stark slaughter of the fleeing innocents - and hodgekiss guns - are gone. Instead we are left with the endless and boring side stories of Wheeler peripherals. The "extra footage" CD is also a waste -- a lot of pontificating from actors, and the music video. Would have much prefered an extended version - geared to an adult audience interested in solid history - not this mishmash of mini vignettes. Additional scenes to better tie the story together - and non-santitized TRUTH. History is too important. This is a heavily edited, sanitized, and choppy film - with a cheesy CD extra with a silly video. Would have prefered the real soundtrack and something with Joseph Marshall narrating. His narration in the film is one of the few good things, along with location shooting.

I don't have the original taped episodes from when it aired however I remember noticing distinct differences in some scenes- even to the point where I went back and compared- its been so long now I don't remember which scenes and exactly what but the WERE edited to cut some stuff out. It was quite annoying actually- if they wanted to sell a 'censored' version a non-censored version should have been available as well.

I have owned the 4 disc set since the day it was released. I find no missing scenes anywhere in the entire series contrary to what else has been posted here. Standard television is like this: a two hour television film has a running time of 85-95 minutes depending on the film. There are usually about a half hour of commercials in a two hour period. Therefore each part of the INTO THE WEST DVD runs right at the one hour thirty minute mark which shows there is none of it cut out. I compared a video taped version of the scenes mentioned as edited to my dvd and find they are identical.

Also, the 6 dvd set is in reality a bootleg. Nothing extra, just one episode per disc. The only official release for this mini series was the TNT release and that is it. Hope that clears up this mess.
