No. Some arcs may have been pointless for developing character, thats true. But thats not why they were there.
They were there to experience events, like the building of the railroads.
Their not pointless, they're plot devices and not really characters.
I also wondered what happened to Abraham Wheeler, we last see him at the inauguration of the railroad but why do the parents look for Margaret but not Abraham?
Also, didn't Jethro Wheeler have a baby with the wife as well or am I confused?
