I live in Iran and "A Jewel in the Palace" is currently broadcasting in my country.
Man! Every magazine I look and everywhere I go they talk about Jang-Geum!!! Even I was heard the she's gona come to Iran due to her wonderful popularity she's gained here by playing this role! More than 98% of viewers gave an A+ to it!!!
Personally I haven't seen any episode of it. But if it's THAT worth watching, I think I should buy the Series' DVDs.
I'm not much of a fan of CGI, Visual Effects, etc... and respect classic works too. So what do you think? Should I try watching it?

It's not popular here in the States.
Well, I think it's popular among Asian Cinema fans, but the U.S. isn't one to show a long running series from a different country, unless it's something like from England. But for the most part, American tv is too concerned with plugging their own shows. From what I've been reading, Kdramas have been growing in popularity all over, but I think in the States it's still more of an underground thing. I've just recently been watching it, and it's beautiful! No CGI or special effects at all, it's just a bright, lovely drama to watch.
I wonder what episode it's on in Iran? I'm barely on episode 17.

Last week, they aired the last episode. Also available here on CD and DVD. I think I'm gonna give it a chance. ;)

Jang-Geum's a wonderfully unique story in the best tradition of classic storytelling. Call it an instant classic of the 21st century.
I wish people in the U.S. would become more exposed to this series and also ponder the fact that it is so popular in Iran and all of Asia because people are the same the world over- they love uplifting stories like this about a remarkable & talented, spiritually good person who perseveres through hellish setbacks and epitomizes all the good qualities in a human being.

Yes, considering it's 54 hour-long episodes, there'll be some predictable scenes, but so what?
The loving detail toward recreating the 16th century palace culture, the cooking and detailed medical info practically makes it a 1st class documentary also. ;-)

The roller-coaster storyline is emotionally exhausting, and intentionally so, I'm sure. We will be relieved and saddened at the same time when we come to the last episode.

I thought, people here don't appreciate well made classic movies with no visual effects. Seems like I was wrong! ;)

I think this show is only popular in Asia.
I'm from Malaysia and when this show aired everyone was crazy about it.

I am Korean and when Dae Jang Geum was aired in S.K it was very popular and i really liked this drama,give it a try and you won't regret

I'm arabic and this show is on one of the arabic channels my parents have but there are people speaking arabic in place of korean. my parents are addicted to this show, everytime they watch television they are watching this show. They are so obsessed with it, i would watch it but they are speaking formal arabic and that is so hard to understand. I really really wanna watch it though...anyone know where there are videos with like english subtitles???

It's very popular in the middle-east too, I kept hearing about it all the time even some local channels are airing it now, I think an Egyptian channel called Hannibal.

Clothing, $85. Earrings, $30. Latte, $4. Getting away with murder... Priceless..!!

it had great ratings in the philippines..
watch it.. trust me, you wont regret it.
I HATE historical dramas.. it had 54 episodes and i heard it wasnt a comedy nor is there lots of romance apparently but i gave it the benefit of the doubt and watched the first episode..
after that i just couldnt stop watching.

it is so heart warming and though the romance is mild, you appreciate it very much. I thought it the best romance yet, the two main have so much chemistry that they had me smiling even when they are just glancing at each other. it's got great humour in it as well.

Best kdrama i've watched so far... and believe me i hae watched WAY too many.

Oh my god I SO want to watch this!! My parents watched it and LOVED IT. I just want to find a DVD that also has english subbies since my bf can't understand Korean or if dubbed in Chinese...=/

I'm from Turkey. This drama has already aired in TRT (Official State Channel)more than three times. It has really great ratings and it led other Korean Dramas air in TRT too.
I'm an addict of Korean dramas and have just finished watching my 48th drama. I can definitely say that Dae Jang Geum is by far the best among them. Whether the cast, (especially the main actress Lee Young Ae) or the script or directing it's all perfect.

If you have any affection to Korean dramas do not ever miss this incredible experience

I'm from Australia and my Indonesian girlfriend has got me watching it. I like it because it reminds me of Oshin. My Chinese housemate recognised it and said her mother was watching it in China, so I guess it's popular everywhere.

Wow! Oshin! it literally mesmerized everyone here about 20 years ago. People still remember it very well here. Now it's kind of part of people's culture here.

I watched it. I cannot think of any american production that is better than this series. The quality is top notch. The soundtrack is as epic as the series is. I would give this series 11 out of 5 stars.. it's absolutely fantastic. I could not stop watching it but did sleep twice while watching every episode straight. I could not stop watching it. And now i'm going to watch it again. The subtitles are mixed blessing. It is NICE to hear the original actors, but in reading subtitles you lose some of the movies visuals. Still this is just an epic movie of the highest caliber. America has never produced anything better. I will be looking for more Korean movies. I know now why dear leader is kidnapping South Korean actors! There was a French count of monte cristo, and a UK miniseries on pride and prejudice, both about 6 hours long. this epic is 50+ hours long a movie you never want to end! WOW! is the best way to describe it!

This is the best thing i have ever seen on tv or the silver screen. This is an epic work. A fantastic story. It has caused me to search for more korean works of art. I think this is better than anything i have ever seen come out of hollywood. one word to describe it.. WOW! I gave this 11 stars out of 5.
