How Casting Was Likely Done

Did anyone else notice, that the director, who is in the tv show, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, clearly found almost all of the cast members for this movie, in Law and Order and Law and Order: SVU?
honestly, theres like only 2 of them that were never on either of them.

reply

I'm in agreement with you. Most directors have input into who is cast for the role.

Well B.D wong was also on OZ with cris maloni, with most of his acting experiance he worked with the same people, so i guess he is using people that wont want much money because there friends and he knows they wont back out, but then again he wads on slappy and the stinkers too and we dont see bronson pinchot in here lol

I stole Stephanie March's B-day lol 07/23/91 just a few decades after lmao!!

So the guy picked people he's worked with in the past. What's the big deal? He obviously has faith in their acting ability and trusts them enough to do the job. If you were directing a movie and had a bunch of friends who were actors, who would you pick? He's not the first person to work with a similar group of people from job to job. As a huge fan of the Law and Order series, I can tell you that most of the people he has chosen (especially Stephanie March)are very talented individuals. How about Kevin Smith? Take a look at his list and tell me how many of those movies haven't had Ben Affleck in them. Not that I don't like Ben Affleck or Kevin Smith, it's just the fact that people choose who they are comfortable working with.

Hmm.... i think i like you...lol. i dont have a problem with him working with the same people ... especially Stephanie March, since she left SVU my life has been kinda empty im glad she is going to be in a movie were she is not touching cris rocks inner thigh (sorry but head of state made me cry for 2 days), would you by any chance know her Address?, i would really like to send her a letter but i only know her parents address and i dont want to bother them.

I work in casting in NY. And what I think none of you realize is that every working actor in NY has been on at least one of the Law & Order's at least once. It would have been hard for them to have found actors that HAVEN'T been on any of the now 4 Law and Order shows.

i read an interview with christopher meloni a while back and he was asked a question about how some of the actors from oz have also appeared on svu. i believe he said that since few projects are shot in nyc, a lot of the same actors end up being on the same films/shows.

reply

MichaelJacksonHistory91- I do not have her adress, but I don't suggest sending a letter. She's a great actress, but remember not to take it too far. PS- who was the "hmmm...i think i like you.." in reference to?

reply

and... growupcast-1~ what four law and order shows? I only know of three

reply

There is a fourth L&O. It's called Law & Order: Trial by Jury. It'll start airing in January, but they've been casting it since August. Jerry Orbach left L&O to do this one, that's why Dennis Farina is on L&O now. So, that makes four Law and Orders.

Hah... I'm not a casting director, but this was the first thing that occurred to me - not only the people who have appeared on L&O, but the cross-mating with Oz and Homicide is outta control.

What Chris Meloni said on his site is that there is a limited pool of actors in NY and he said it would be ridiculous for casting directors to not choose from them.

A limited pool of actors in New York???

What a laugh. New York has TONS of actors.

Of course some of the principle actors worked together on Law & Order. And others met socially.

As far as casting for "extras", I recall reading a "cattle call" listing for the movie.

I was casted as an extra through an agent (I was one of the coffee house attendants -- in the black-pin-striped/long-sleeve shirt, behind the counter.)

It was a great experience. I only wish I knew when the theatrical release of the movie is going to be.

Until then,

Sam.

reply

Hi Sam,
As an extra didnt you get anyone's contact information so you can ask what's happening? :)

reply

All this means is that Wong had a way to get to some of the best actors in New York. Not all of these people are well known, but they are the cream, trust me.

reply

Russ Russo is one of the best Independent Film Actors in NY and he hasn't appeared in a Law & Order episode that I know of yet he plays 'Cam' in "Social Grace"

reply

Peter Bron wasn't in a L&O episodes, and he's in the movie. He's awesome. Hot as hell. He plays 'Broker' in this.

reply

Even Stephanie March's husband is in this movie ...

B.D. Wong is also a first time director, meaning some actors (or their agents) might not have faith in his abilities. It's easier to get your friends to take things on faith than strangers. Amber Benson from Buffy wrote and directed an independent movie and most of her cast came from Buffy and Angel or friends she had outside of the shows. It is very natural for first time directors. If you were going to make your first movie, you would probably just go around asking your friends if they were interested. It just happens that they are famous when they make their first movie, so their friends are famous as well.

What many of you may not know is that B.D., Chris Meloni, Roger Rees, and Lewis Black who are all cast members of Social Grace, and I would be willing to bet several others, are alumni of the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Many of the actors who perform at the summer stock theatre have also been on the Law and Orders. I would bet B.D.'s choices in actors have more to do with working with them on the stages of WTF than Law and Order.
