This is what 'Friends' would have been like in France

I saw this film without even knowing that it was a sequel, so I evaluated it on its own merits, or lack thereof. Let's hope the first one in the series was better than this snooze-fest. All I could think of was that "russian dolls" was what the TV show "FRIENDS" would have been like if it had been made by the French film industry. Lots more skin, much fewer laughs, less likeable people.

The only parts I found amusing were the scenes with the writer interacting with the idiots at the TV production company. They were fairly "spot on" in their description of what it's like for a creative person to deal with idiots who only care about ad dollars and cliches.

I am an American who speaks and reads French, has been to France several times, and reads French books regularly. So don't brand me with the usual "dumb American" cliches. This movie was just...mediocre!

I think the first movie is MUCH more like friends you should go see it. Its better than this one. And recently, this week theyve been playing it on IFC

Well, LCShackley, allow me to brand you with a "dumb American cliche" for the ignorant remark you jsut made earlier. Ignorant and quite dumb, i might add, despite the fact that this isn't the first time you come across European culture, as so you say.

Jesus, i smelled your "american" point of view from a mile away. You just missed the whole point of the movie completely, didn't you ? :)

But hey, you're entitled to your own opinion, just as everybody else.

To compare this with Friends is a sick joke. This kind of film is impossible for Americans to recreate for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the insatiable need to massage egos constantly.

Snow_blind, I don't know what the hell your problem is, because there was nothing, nothing, in the OP's post that should have warranted such a response.

People are allowed to not like movies which others do. People are also allowed to like movies which others do not. It's called an opinion.

I'm an American student, and I'm currently studying French. Only a few days ago, I saw L'Auberge Espagnole for the first time. In fact, I greatly enjoyed it, as there was literally something for everyone in the movie. I have not seen Les Poupées rousses, so I cannot evaluate it, but the OP (LCShackley) clearly didn't enjoy it, and gave a coherent, non-insulting argument as to why.

But then you, snow_blind77, embark on a clichéd anti-American rant, repeatedly insulting the OP's intelligence in a way that makes me doubt yours. And that smiley-face was just icing on the cake. :-)

Does it feel good to be a troll?

Of course, the OP is perfectly entitled to his decision. But to compare a french movie to an american sitcom is a little lame, because the purpose of both of these products are completely different.
"Friends" doesnt show the real life: the characters are nice, funny and clean. Nobody smokes (when Chandler does, he is quickly told off by everybody and has to stop; nobody drinks, except in rarely occasions; they hardly swear; they all have nice appartments and all in their lives seems too neat.
And they just keep dating each other.

"Les Poupées Russes", that is a bad sequel of "L'auberge espagnol" shows more authenticity than "Friends".
Xavier could be compared to Joey, as he just has one-night stands but the difference is that Xavier is really shown as an *beep* while Joey is this nice dumb guy always smiling who treats girls like trash.
And yes, European people smoke (even pot), drink, swear and sleep naked (when they have sex, women dont keep their bra on!).

Now, I dont think United States could make a movie as authentic as "L'auberge espagnole" but neither I dont think France could make a sitcom as "Friends".
