Brilliant 1st half, Stupid 2nd half

2nd half takes a 180 from the comedic 1st half and introduces unintentional silliness whereas the 1st half's was intentional.
Still definitely worth seeing for the good parts which are much like MSG's.
Who else was disappointed or pleased with Windstruck?

reply

The first half was comical and adorable to watch. Whereas the second half, though it does have its moments, was rather uncomfortable to bear. The theme is more or less an extension of MSG's and tries to be as sonorous as well. Overall, Windstruck is just another derivative of My Sassy Girl; however, some might say the ending suggests that--theme-wise-- Windstruck is a prequel to MSG. Was I disappointed with this movie? Nope, my expectation was low to begin with and I knew it wasn't going to surpass MSG.

reply

I don't think the movie was hinting as being a prequel to My Sassy Girl. In fact, the entire movie is a sort of parody of director Jae-young Kwak's other movies. If you watch his other films, you'll see that Windstruck is full of playful references to The Classic, My Sassy Girl, etc. Personally, I don't think Jae-young Kwak meant for Windstruck to be a re-hashing of the formula that made My Sassy Girl so successful; rather it's more of a good-humored satire of his own works.

reply

I wouldn't go so far as to say that the 2nd half was stupid, but I think that the pacing became really inconsistent as the movie went on. There seemed to be a couple too many dramatic climaxes which sort of threw me off. If the pacing was better (maybe a directors cut could help), this could have been great. Still, there are plenty of cool, cute, and beautiful moments, and Ji Hyun did a very good job with her role.

I think it was hailed in Korea as one of the worst movies of 2004.

Bad plot, WAY to much glaringly-obvious PPL, bad directing.

What were they thinking when they made this movie??!

reply

Well, not to point out your obvious bad source, but according to hancinema, it is the most wanted movie as of the date of this post.
As for the film, I enjoyed it. It was nowhere near MSG, and the ending of Windstruck doesn't line up with the beginning of MSG, so that wes a let-down. As the title of the thred suggests, the second half was..... not as good.

For example....

!!!spoilers below!!!!!

the fact that she talks to myungwoo as a ghost was just plain stupid. MSG never relied on science fiction to make a point, so why would the prequel do so? It just makes it awkward later (as in MSG)
Also, kyungjin and kyunwoo didnt meet at the train station that way. At the end of windstruck, she was wearing a police uniform and wasn't drunk when she met kyunwoo. It could be argued that they met twice, but there was no indication in MSG of this.

!!!!!!end spoilers!!!!!

overall, I think it was an enjoyable movie. It will be difficult for any movie to ever surpass MSG, so you must watch this movie without comparing it to MSG, or you will be dissapointed.

reply

MSG relied on sci fi to make a point actually ... the ufo thing ...

reply

It depends how you look at it.

To me, I think the Girl in Windstruck's ending met the My Sassy Girl Guy's cousin. This is the reason why she is not drunk at the train station in Windstruck's ending. Remember in My Sassy Girl, the aunt mentioned that both cousins look identical.

reply

then why did the Girl didn't recognize Kyun-woo? Did she consume alcohol way too much it messes her eyesight? Sorry to be rude but we have to look the other way too... *^^*

reply

if you'll notice in his/her various posts (here and the yeopgi forum), zhixiong likes to imagine stuff ... don't pay too much attention to such ... they're (zhixiong's explanations) mostly unsupported by facts and often contradictory ...

reply

You are wrong. It was the best box office(or best selling) movie until Spiderman 2 arrived.

reply

I said worst movie, not the least selling movie.
Even crap movies can generate a lot of audiences.

For all its hype this movie did relatively bomb.

If you don't believe me, look up Yeochinso in naver.com
You'll find that 90% of the reviews are flames.

The first half of the film had some good moments and I felt the characters were introduced in a entertaining way. Unfortunetly the second half is way too sentimental and sappy. And as someone previously mentioned it has a couple too many dramatic climaxes. After a while I was just hoping for it to end before it got even more sentimental, but it just kept on going. As for the ending, I don't think it is to be considered a "real" prequal to MSG. I see it more as the director just having a bit of fun.

I think this film would have benifited by cutting down the tear-eyed ending too 10 or 15 minutes, instead of making it the entire second half of the film.

reply

Oh come on guys, where's your sense of romance??

I personally found this film very heart-warming and touching!

I laughed all the way through the first half and cried through the second.

reply

that is so pathetic...

reply

ummm what's pathetic about finding this film to be "heart-warming and touching"?
The 1st half was kinda funny and the 2nd half was really emotional.........is there something wrong with that? I thought this was suppose to be a romance/comedy movie?

reply

i think the director was trying hard to make the film romantic as far as romantic movies goes. while watching the movie, i find the female very very delusional. and the wind part was really exaggerated. this exaggerativeness really doesnt work except for pre-destiny type of a movie. it worked really well for this hong kong movie called "turn left, turn right". and of course for my sassy girl. the movie was i think very predictivable, on the sense that hints were overly implied on the mountain scene, where the guy tells her that he wants to be the wind when he dies. and the part where the girl was telling him a story. the only scene that i really liked in this film was when they were dancing in the rain and the " . . . just a little bit longer . . ." song can be heard in the background.
maybe i was just expecting such caliber as my sassy girl offered.

mmm the thing that pissed me off the most was the suicide
making suicide all romantic and whatnot is bad enough influence...and she jumps above a crowd??? she deserves to burn in hell if that balloon didn't save her...

also...the director sucks pretty bad at action scenes...it's obvious from MSG, but that was funny so it's ok...in the first half it was meant to be funny, so that's also ok. But for instance in the second half, when they're trying to stop the speeding car, there's a whole squad of swat guys with guns...and she steps out in front to shoot the car. That's just stupid.
And the final chase with the bad guy...[really] poorly shot and way too long

I don't know...in some of the Korean movies that I've seen, melodrama just isn't well placed

Right and Watching a movie were you see tons of people die isn't a bad movie?

Gee were YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO THE MOVIE?!it wasn't the balloon that saved her
It was her BOYFRIEND. and that wasn't the point of the movie. the point of that scene was that the Boyfriend went to great lengths to try and tell her to move on with her Life.

what? you watch a Romance movie for the action scenes?
The action scenes also weren't really suppose to be serious. they were a parody of other action movies. the final chase with the bad guy was not bad at all, if you want a poorly shot movie watch house of the dead.

You don't know what poorly shot is and please explain what poorly shot is?

Koreans Melodramas are well placed. it's very well placed in fact it's probably some of the best placed melodramas because they add different and interesting elements from other movies that people don't dare to do

reply

I like the 2nd half more than the first. I like this movie more than MSG. The reason being the girl is too overbearing and crazy at times, but the melodramatic moments redeem her. It's good to see her actually feeling guilty for treating the two guys like toys and being serious once in a while. I'm not a dramatic person but those parts just get me.

reply

the movie was amazing. the only thing was that was bad was the pacing. and i agree with the person who said that there were a bit too many Romantic Climaxes that the audience would feel exhausted though there are a bit too many, the movie was still great. For the guy that said this was voted the worst korean movie...

http://www.hancinema.net/korean_movie_Windstruck.php

Sure and since it was so bad it was a Huge Hit IN JAPAN AND KOREA lol

and if thats the worst movie for korea gee I wonder what there Best it i think i'll get owned by the awesomeness of Korean cinema.

This is far by the best Movie that is like a Masterpiece with some obvious flaws.

It's different in so many ways
there is action and it's quite bloody for a chick flick so i would say this movie is fit for anybody who loves a good Cute Romance Fantasy movie

the bad thing is that the movie was just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long though i think most of the stuff was necessary.

This is by Far one of the best Korean movies ever and the one of the Best Drama movies ever.

The director knows how to direct a Cute, Sweet movie

While other directors like Wong Kar Wai can direct beautiful Serious Romance.

this director is a GENIOUS!

reply

Yep,the director really lost it in the second half.Everything looked natural in the first half and then ...the director lost it, and came with some strange Dirty Harry(ette)action, and some ghost story that worked better in the american movie'Ghost'.He really(wind)struck the wrong cords with this movie, in comparison with 'My Sassy Girl'.

i think both halves should have been 2 different movies.

either that, or the director should have made a more seamless transition instead of a comedy/melodrama feeling and trying to outdo/copy MSG. I was laughing the first half and crying the second half - and in the end that all i had from the movie was a headache.

but good try though, and Ji Hyun's acting was one of the elements in the movie that made it worthwhile...
