Funny that the Hurricane was named Sandy

Not that funny at all. The National Weather Service has only a handful of names for each letter. They go by a revolving schedule of something like 7-8 years. So, since Sandy was the 2012 "S" storm, it was likely the "S" storm in the early 00s when this movie was being conceived. (If you can call it that since this plot has been done hundreds of times.)

2012 Sandy will likely be the last Sandy however, since with major storms like it, or Katrina, they retire the name and pick a new one for that latter, for historical purposes.
