Problems with the Casino

In the casino scene Georgia hits 17 three times letting it ride, meaning that everything she wins she bets again. When she wins 3 times they said she won about $150,000. With the payout of roulette being at 35 to 1 this means she only made about a $3 bet which at an up scale casino is well under any reasonable table limit. Also someone makes a comment that her first bet is a lot of money. What I expect her to have done is place about a $1,000 bet. Letting it ride and hitting 17 three times that would be about $46 million.

Yeah I noticed that too. Also the likelihood of actually guessing the winning number three times in a row, and for that number to be the same each time, is ridiculously low. In fact, if you managed that feat in an actual casino, they would probably haul you out back and go over your body with a microscope to figure out how you did it... that's after they break your fingers of course, and before they hold a gun to your head asking NICELY, what your scam is and where your partners are.

OK so I might be exaggerating a bit, but these are the people who traditionally beat people up for suspicion of "counting cards" at blackjack, which is perfectly legal both in terms of the law and the rules of the game.

Hell if I ran a casino I would probably be more than a little suspicious of the foreigner who just walked in, placed three bets, and walked out with 100.000$ or even 43.000.000$ of my money.

But I liked the movie... It made me feel good ;-)

Maybe the minimum bet was lower since it was a charity event. Since the casino is worried less about maximizing profit, maybe they allow any bet.

But the redhead says 'are you sure, that's a lot of money' before she places the first bet!!

I was surprised when she only got 100,000 (was it Euros?). I get that to be around 2 euros stake!

She didn't bet everything each time. If you look carefully you see its about the same amount each time. She probably just left the original bet roll three times. Plus a lot of people's chips are there too. So if she bet 1000 each time her total winnings would be 105k. The croupier says its about 100k. So it fits.
And btw, a 1000 bucks bet in a place that charges 4000 per night is ridiculously low. It was after all a silly scene.

The purpose of that scene was twofold: to demonstrate that Georgia gets more when she cares less (obsesses less, unlike Kragen) and to reassure viewers that she would be able to replace all the money she'd blown...especially since we all knew she was misdiagnosed.

It isn't really a "good" movie in critical terms, but I think Latifah is incredibly watchable. I really liked the cast and found the movie charming. I just watched it again last night and was reminded of what a presence she has.

I agree the casino scene was ridiculous since the math didn't fit at all.

But i just want to say that its entirely possible for the same number to be hit three times in a row. The funny thing is that it happened to me, unfortunately i only bet on it the first time, and i thought there is no chance it would hit two times in a row, then it did and then again 3rd time. As a math freak i was like OMG :D

Also the casino staff told me that its not that rare when a number is hit two times in a row, they also told me that usually players always leave the original bet on a winning number. I guess its understandable to leave the original bet there but i sure am no profi player if there is someone like that when it comes to roulette. :)

She did indeed bet all of her winnings each time. So her initial bet had to be between $3 and $4 U.S. if her final total was around $150,000 U.S. It makes no sense in terms of the math. If her initial bet was as big as the Alicia Witt character made it out to be, she'd have won millions. Assuming of course she didn't run into a maximum bet limit after the first two hits.

the times that Ive seen the same 3 numbers come up in a row are the number zero (ie the house wins)...... funny that!

The script probably said she would win millions, but then at some point during the production someone realised that the main character suddenly being rich through sheer luck with no lessons learned is shit. Then they tuned it down to just replacing the losses of her spending splurge.
