remake vs original

I prefer the unpredictable ending to the original movie with Alec Guiness. The remake has the dull happy ending modern audiences seem to demand. the tragic ending seems to be more realistic and tragic, fitting the entire film. which do you prefer?

I haven't seen the original yet. Would like to someday. I do like the happy ending on this one though. Why not? Why should everything always end badly? "Reality" can just as easily be positive as negative. Things in life can and do unexpectedly take turns for the better at times. I'm glad this one chose up, not down. It suited me just fine.

Not ragging on you for preferring the darker one though. Our preferences are all subjective. Whatever works, right?

I do prefer a more upbeat happier movie so the change in the remake is more my style. But I don't hate the original either. I think both endings fit the movies the people were trying to make.

For the original, it was a darker more "realistic" type of story so the ending fit and was poignant. I especially loved how, after all that Alec's character did for the guests/workers at the hotel, they instantly turn on him and begin spreading rumors. I love all of their reactions when they find out what happened to him. Very tragic.

For the remake, the movie was an all around RomCom and therefor needed to be more positive. To keep the ending would really be anti climactic. I love that she, as a character, realizes you can't be afraid and have to live. Her letter about 'not wanting to be trapped in a box' was great. I will admit, this movie always inspires me and makes me feel better when I am in a bad mood.

So anyway, I liked both styles but I do prefer the remake and it's more positive ending.

This is just my opinion, but even though most people who saw this movie probably never even heard of the original, nobody would've gone to see a movie where Queen Latifah painfully and horribly dies of a terminal illness.

Thank you for letting us know it was a remake, even those of us who watch old films we don't catch them all. I wish they would automatically put this info in the trivia.
