Why were they *spoilers*

Why were the soldiers in the basement kept alive? I assume that they knew something they weren't supposed to know, since they were kept away and not just sent home, but why wasn't they just killed instead og keeping them alive?

I say assume because we never get any wiser about what is really going on, which kind of borther me.

Maybe somebody who have read the book can answer?

Who knows? It's the major problem of this film. Why were they there? If Col. Woolwrap was taking care of his men how did he get the base? The men were injured so why weren't they sent home. Why were the families told they were dead?

Lots of simple questions with no answers.

It's a failure of this film.

They weren't really keeping them alive, just keeping them as comfortable as possible while they slowly rotted away. I suppose one might assume that, sitting in an underground bunker at an 'armpit' post in Greenland, their secret was safe. Woolwrap might have been given a choice between being the custodian of the remains of his command, versus simply killing the survivors off. It doesn't really matter. They are kept alive because this advances the plotline of the film.

Basically it seemed like some mission in Vietnam went wrong, but the army/government covered it up and didn't want to risk let the wounded men spilling the beans, so they just told the families they'd been in killed in action and swept the seriously injured men under the carpet by sticking them somewhere far away, they thought they were vegetables and would die sooner or later anyway. If they killed them if think that would be crossing the line even further and if it did get out things would be worse for all involved.
