Good pilot

The pilot was very exotic looking (as you would expect being set in South Africa). It was also a little slow-paced and intentionally cryptic, but by the end I was hooked.

I don't usually post, but this show was incredible. Every frame was like a picture. I liked the slow build up. It gave you time to acclimate yourself to the 3 worlds - which are similar and different. It's kind of Minority Reportish in it's look. Reading the website beforehand helps with understanding the story.

Can't wait for more!!

I have to say I enjoyed it. I'm glad I taped it as it is worth a second viewing... got a little muddled at times... keeping track of which verse you're in takes a second or two...

Good call on the Minority Report comment. The pilot on Saturday also reminded me of cinematography from some great films. Specifically the dream sequences in Gladiator, the Mexican locales shot for the film Traffic and parts of 21 Grams. I really liked the adds that ran selling the 2 hour pilot and I'm interested in seeing where this series goes.

Sad to hear about the Executive Producer dying the other week. I live a couple of hours away from Montreal and I briefly remember coming across the news item in the paper.

Looking forward to the next episode this Saturday !!

I thought it was great too. I was shocked to find out it was a done on Canadian money. Wow, what great production values. I thought that once Battlestar Gallactica went on break that there would be a void left in good, gritty sci fi -- Charlie Jade came just in time to fill that void. Man is 01 a creep!!!

Excellent show, amazing. This is the best and most original show I have seen in years on TV. The fact that it is a UK/Canada/South Africa co-production makes it even better. This is one of the best shows on TV period. I am so glad that there are people out there willing to take a chance and create an intelligent, imaginative and creative programme such as this.

The look, imagery, cinematography of the show is just great. The actors are good, the story is likewise. I cannot say enough about this show. In a time when reality tv shows are just flooding the small screen, since they are considered a cheap, fast and easy filler of screen time, Charlie Jade is a breath of fresh air. Way to go!!!!

Just one question, is this a one season only show? In a way it would be actually good if it was! It would be hard to maintain the quality of the show if it becomes prolonged. I would take one good season than two or more watered down and mediocre ones. Case in point, 24, the first season I thought was brilliant, I had seen nothing similiar up to that point. By the second season it fell flat. I watched the second season out of curiosity, but I have lost interest since. I mean how many times is everything going to end?!?!?!? How many dangers and attacks are there!?!?!? Ok an atomic bomb, then a virus, what the hell will come afer....ah I know ALIENS, no no that's not it, Godzilla, not that's not it either, oh no ITS THE ZOMBIES!!!!!

As far as Charlie Jade is concerned, I remember one of the show's creators, Rober Wertheimer, saying that this was more like a twenty-hour movie, like a one time epic sci-fi journey. And I was getting the same feeling from the actors, especially Mark Fillipovitch and Jeffrey Pierce. I sure hope they are right. Anybody remember Total Recall 2070, that was another great show, but it was cancelled without a proper conclusion as far as I can remember...

reply

Hey ya -- total Recall 2070 -- Charlie Jade is very similar to that. They both are slow-paced, dark & gritty, concentrate on a Coporate conspiracy, and you have to pay close attention to understand what the hell is going on. Honestly, I sometimes get lost in this series. Probably because I missed an episode. I still enjoy it though. Do you think that Charlie will ever figure out how to use the water to travel like 01 does?

In all the interviews I've seen on Space Channel, no one has ever discussed a second season. They received a rather significant grant from the feds in Canada for the first season -- they would need a major corporation/studio to come on board for season 2 to become a reality. I think the anti-corporate themes of Charlie Jade would probably kill any shot of that ever happening. Oh well -- I'll take on season of original programming over nothing!!!

reply

Just to reply to you query Jaxtrader, I think that Charlie Jade travels between the universes by different means than 01 Boxer. It's just that he hasn't realized it yet. I guess that is the point, that once he figures out how to do it, he can get rid of Vexcor once and for all, the one entity that has brought so much misery in his life (remember he used to be employed by them, a kind of professional killer/merc.

I'm just speculating here but I think that in the first episodes he used to get somekind of headaches, he thought they were delusions, but while he was getting them he could literally see the other universes. I think that he can teleport (or whatever the hell it is called) himself between the parallel universes just by thinking about the places, using his mind. There was one episode where he almost does it, remember the one where he is in the middle of the street and he starts seeing his own universe and then he sees someone he knows, he starts screaming at the other person, who almost sees him, but then he's gone again. Both 01 and him have this one thing in common in that they have both mutated, O1 because of his father who used to travel frequently between universes, and Charlie Jade it is unclear how. I think that they might be related, perhaps brothers or something... For more answers just check the website www.charliejade.com

Wow, thanks. I had wondered where to find out info on the show. I cannot believe its as simple as www.charliejade.com. LOL! Unfortunately, I missed the last two weeks so hopefully the website will be useful.

You think 01 and Charlie could be brothers! That's so scandalous -- I love it :D

I don't think Charlie was "mutated". I think he's just a variant in the population. For example, in beta verse there is the young girl who can see "invisble people." It's a natural mutatation, if you will, rather than an artificial circumstance that created a human that has these powers. That's my interpretation at least.

reply

Thanks. I guess you might be right about him not being mutated. You know I was just rambling there. Anyways the thing about both of them being related, I think I either read it somewhere, or if not it was in that half-hour special that they aired before the series premiered on Space. I think it was one of the actors talking about this stuff, I think it was Mark Fillipowitch (01 Boxer). Remember that the episodes have already been filmed and that most of the post-production work is done. Anyways I am not sure about wether they are related or not. I thought perhaps it would better explain why Charlie Jade could see the other universes so vividly.
I just enjoy the show. I take a look around at the crap that is on tv, and I am just glad that there are some shows which at least try to incorporate more substance and originality. For me Charlie Jade qualifies as that. I am not a fanboy or somekind of nut, (perhaps I was a bit too enthusiastic in my previous postings), seeing this show I was just pleasantly surprised at the its quality.

reply

i think it would be cool if 01 and charlie were brothers or something... there's definitely some kind of revelation coming. because boxer was, or it seemed, supposed to be a really loathsome character for the first few episodes, and even though he's still pretty weird and pathological, it looks like he's got some secrets and some soft spots of his own. charlie and boxer, in my opinion, are definitely going to have to work together some how... or they're going to learn they have something important in common.

reply

I agree... theres definitly something happening there, or about to happen. It seems like every show has a sim ilar way of hinting to the viewers when something significant is going on, even when it hasnt been explicitly shown.

is this it?

reply

Well I guess we were right. They did end up working together...So there must be another season at least!? I thought that this was a one season show only. I recall Robert Wertheimer, one of the creators of the show, saying that "Charlie Jade" was more like a 20 hour movie.

By the way the ending was excellent, an amazing cap for a great tv show. Thank God it wasn't happy or rosy or something. It ended on an ambigous note and left some questions unanswered. In a way if you think about it, things are going to get worse (should the show continue), especially since now the link between all 3 universes, but especially AlphaVerse (the screwed -up one) and GammaVerse (the idillic one) is now open permanently. Also the population of BetaVerse (our universe) is not aware of the link at all, save a few individuals. Now the fight for domination will start. Just because 01 is no longer there it doesn't mean that Vexcor or any of other corporations (in AlphaVerse there are I believe 5 large coporations which basically run society) won't still try to exploit the other two universes to their advantage. And also if you paid attention at the very end you can hear the anouncement in AlphaVerse about "immigration applications to GammaVerse are now open...

Also if you recall 01 Boxer mentioned to Charlie Jade in this last episode, that his father had a file on Charlie from way back when, way before the point at which the show started, so that is why I think that somehow they, Charlie and 01 are related. It is no coincidence that they can both shift between universes. And as the show ended they were keeping each other alive by shifting blood from one to another...

And those enigmatic guys in black suits that appeared throughout the show, I take it they will be the central focus of the next season, as the story will surely expand. The guys in the black suits, as 01 Boxer said to Charlie, are behind everything. Remember that Charlie confronts one of them directly, and sees a few more throughout the show. Plus then there is that encounter in the special episode between Carl and one of those men, remember he tells him the whole story and at the end the man touches him and he forgets everything. If you noticed, everytime one of them dudes shows up, a weird yellow light seems to engulf them the same happens when Carl is touched by they guy in the bar. And at the end of the last episode they say "This we did not expect". It is as if they are entities (not sure if they are entirely human, 01 said that they have no fingerprints) from another universe, and that they have a stake in what is happening, especially since they seem to know what it is going to happen before hand... except that what occurs at the end takes them by surprise. I think that they expected a certain outcome, and that each character would play a certain role (one of them dudes tell Carl "just play your part")

Anyways, I have gone on too long, but even if they decide to do more episodes of Charlie Jade or not, it was an excellent show, great! I cannot say enough about it, in all aspects, acting, special effects, cinematography etc. etc. If this was the last of the show, it ended greatly anyways, and it made sense.

But remember that there are more than 3 universes, when Charlie first started shifting with the help of the little girl, he "visited" way more than 3 universes, some were clearly neither Alpha, Beta nor Gamma. Oh yeah and one last point, if you watch the last scene they show from BetaVerse, were Charlie Jade's girlfriend, the policewoman, sits next to the ocean and there is a swimming pool behind her, in the water appeared for a very brief instant a caption saying "half an hour from now..." and that was it. If you check the website (www.charliejade.com) that caption appears also...

PS The Space network promo mentioned "the season finale" not the "series finale"...

Hey anybody have any idea if there will be a second season? And also will the show be available on DVD anytime soon?

reply

I've just seen the second episode (I saw the pilot episode last week) and I'm really enjoying Charlie Jade. If it's this good all the way through it's going to be a terrific show!

I thought the first two episodes great too, its just so beautifully shot, well acted and with an interesting story. I’m surprised I’ve never heard of it before, was this ever shown in America? Or did the studios there not ‘get’ it?

You watched it, you cant un-watch it!

reply

I'm watching the Pilot now and it is a fine show... I appreciate the pacing & ambience. It is actually relaxing w/out all the frenetic stress of overburdened sights/sounds... while still being quite interesting. They only did 20 eps. apparently. All available online. A shame it didn't get further..

I saw this show is 2014. It was a well kept secret for years that it even existed. Syfy buried it by playing it at 3am 2008 to 2009 season. If you go to the Charlie Jade official website, there are some very interesting pod casts by the creators and producers. I loved this show!
