David Tennant question

The series played just during December in Australia and i was wondering if there was ever an explanation to why his character eats so much food hes forever snacking on lollies and junk food. Was it ever explained in the series and i just missed it or what?

P.S i'm so jealous u got the Dr Who Christmas special i wont see it for months i expect (if they decide to show it at all which i think they will hopefully) the ABC is screwing me over

it was mainly a symbolic device. If you notice David Tennant's character DI Carlisle only eats food when he is either happy, thinking or on top of things, however Carlisle openly shuns food or throws it away when he is upset or very confused.
think of it basically as a visual representation of how he is feeling,

reply

Thank you for answering now you've mentioned it that does make a lot of sense

Food for thought :)

all i can say is it must have sucked for tennant to have to stuff himself so much take after take to play such a character. i'm surprised (and a bit jealous, i must admit) that he's still as thin as he is.

reply

Yes, soo very thin. How does he do that?? Count me as jealous here, too LOL

Don't forget that Carlisle tells Ruth in the club that she can keep his packet of antacid tablets as he's 'taking kaolin and morphine on a trial basis'. So his digestion must be almost as bad as hers! Actually, I've noticed [in one of my many - ahem - ff and rew moments with this dvd] that Tennant takes small bites, not fill-yer-mouth chunks, of whatever the junk is: fairy floss [that pink spun sugar stuff in celophane packets], doughnuts, pastries, or those rather dubious looking take-away deep fried bites of something or other that he was eating with a spoon outside the Samaritans office. And, in the lovely Date scene, I noticed that he took only one small sip of the beer in his glass, not a full mouthfull at all. On the other hand, he did seem to hoe into the cereal in the bowl, which he had while at his desk, and he's a big coffee drinker LOL Is Tennant a vegetarian IRL? Does he eschew the demon drink? As a son of the manse, is he principled about what image he sends to impressionable viewers? Maybe none of these apply at all, but I do love speculation.

Anyway, hardly anyone at all smokes or drinks alcohol in the series, except for Ripley Holden himself. Is this to emphasise his multiple bad-assedness? Whatever, it is a change from those films where most of the characters are forever lighting up, blowing reflective smoke rings or puffing toxic fumes at other characters in what is meant to be an erotic turn-on. Or getting plastered, or course. And the sex scenes are not exactly wildly graphic are they? A great deal more is implied and suggested than is shown. Again, IMO, a welcome change. But, ironically, Ripley is the only character to have a condom in his possession, the mildly out-of-date one he gives to his mate at the wedding. Carlisle and Natalie seem to let lusty spontaneity be their guide, which - having a lot to do with carefree teens in my day job - I always rather wish was not the case in the tv shows and films that I see.

Last point. Doesn't Blackpool have anti-littering laws? The lovely Carlisle is a serial offender!

reply

I was just wondering did they somehow shrink david tennant in this series? cos u no he is like a foot shorter than sarah parish but in photos of them standing still he is like and inch or two taller.

reply

Ahhhh. More unhappy Australians - may I join in your complaining?

I got a pirate dvd of X-mas invasion off eBay so that's cool and all. What pisses me off is that chances are they're not going to get broadcasting rights for TCI until after season 2 starts in Britian. Then we have to wait for them to get the broadcasting rights for season 2 before we can see it.

If that doesn't make sense then sorry. I sorta know what I mean in my head but it's hard to word it...

Jan. 13th 2006:

ABC's Audience and Consumer Affairs has this to say about the series' status: "At this stage, the ABC has not yet secured the broadcast rights for the Doctor Who Christmas Special or the new series of Doctor Who. Having said this, it is highly likely that the ABC will purchase the rights and show the new series, and the Christmas special during 2006."

Highly likely? Me no happy. Woah, 3:40, me should sleep...

Ahem...check You Tube. That is how I watched it.

Tennant is 6', maybe 6'1" - I know this because I've stood next to him and I'm 5'11"!!!

reply

Count me among the many jealous people here......

Where was this? When?
Did you speak?
Does he seem really thin IRL? If the camera really 'puts on 5 lbs', DT must be no wider than a matchstick IRL LOL

<>sigh<>

reply

I met him last summer in L.A. when he was promoting "Viva Blackpool" for BBC America.

I spoke to him for quite some time. Super nice guy; he came across to me as rather shy and reserved. On the other hand, I'm a huge "Doctor Who" fan, and as he'd only played the part for about 30 seconds at that point, I'm sure I scared the hell out of him. And yeah, he's rail thin - but not in a bad way.

No nakedness by any of 'em. They seem to get their gear off to underwear level, but there is a lot of ploy with sheets etc.

A lot of hotness is suggested and implied but, really, it's all a cinematic illusion. Plenty of sexy scenes involving Morrisey and Parish, and Tennant and Parish, that are - in comparison with some of the more raunchy stuff that goes out on prime time tv and in the movies - tame but nonetheless highly effective, because they are artfully suggestive, not crassly blatant. By far, imo, the most erotic scene in the whole thing is when DI Carlisle [Tennant] and Natalie [Parish] have their first date at a drag club. It is full of UST and is played so hot, so beautifully, but it is all done with looks and glances and even non-glances! As well, Gabrielle's very evocative song works a treat and is mimed/sung by T and P. <> Big sigh <>

Doesn't Morrisey look like Elvis in some scenes? Has he ever played him?
I do love him in 'State of Play', which I bought after watching him in "Blackpool" and being so impressed. Not that he's David Tennant, of course, who so engagingly just about steals every scene.....

Edited cos I've just recalled something else: one night there is an in-bed-and-kissing scene between Ripley & Natalie, a bit after she has begun her affair with Carlisle. As her husband is kissing her, Natalie fantasises that it is Carlisle, so we get to see the artful techniques of both of the men alternately LOL. How lucky is Sarah Parish, eh? And I must add that DT seemed to be throwing himself into his work: very serious actor-mode.
[I can't believe that it took me a couple of viewings to notice this swap scene

AnaR the fairy floss is also known as Candy Floss or Cotton Candy. Also the dubious looking take-away deep fried bites you refer to are Chips. A delicacy of sorts, found in chip shops around the UK - also known as fries in america and who knows what in other countries! Basically deep fried, chunked potato :) At least thats what I assume they are!!

I agree about the condom thing - where the hell was the safe-sex?

And finally, yes, Carlisle is a serial litterer but he could tip a rubbish bin over my head and I would still fancy the pants off of him!!

reply

we have chips in australia.........haha

A is for Anna. B is for Brutus. H is for THE HIVES!!

reply

I wish I could eat that much food and stay as thin as Mr Tennant lol!!!!!!!
I did understand it was all based around the emotional eating thing though- I loved the ice cream singing bit - classic!

reply

the fried things outside the samaritans would infact be cockles... seafoody mollusky things... small and chewey and if i was him i would have thrown them away too!

reply

I'd add that as well as an emotional device, his constant eating also identifies him as an outsider. as you said most of the food he's eating is junk food and its the kind of things you get along the promenade at Blackpool - the candy floss (or fairy floss :p), doughnuts, the chips/cockles (I'd say chips myself). This type of food is widely found in seaside towns or at funfairs etc. I say this because as well as the junk food he's constantly eating he also does quite a few touristy things - one of the first times he goes to the arcade (after his initial visit when the body is there) he uses one of the arcade games, one of the next times he uses the portrait machine, he also goes up to the top of Blackpool Tower and I'm pretty sure there are others. He sits along the promenade quite a bit as well, in fact really the only time I think we see the promenade is when he is with his partner or with Natalie. Natalie also goes with him to Funny Girls (a popular Blackpool club) and to the Blackpool tower aquarium and they balldance during Shall I Go, presumably again in Blackpool tower.

reply

I too noticed the eating and the littering--it's been driving me nuts.

reply

His eating a lot kind of reminded me of Brad Pitt in Ocean's Eleven! And Ocean's Twelve I suppose.

my ouestion is how can one man be so sexy no matter what he is doing wheather its eating ,singing, shagging is the man mutli skilled or what

reply

Very easily in David Tennants case!

Black is not a colour, it's a state of mind...

reply

Lol I bet so!

Hello fellow Australian Tennant-ites. Loving David, definitely very gorgeous, and extremely sexy in Blackpool. I would have loved to be that ice cream/beer/fried cockle (?) any given time or day.

Just a quick question - does anybody know where to rent it? The ABC Shop has decided to become evil and not stock Blackpool (or I didn't find it anywhere), and I am getting some dangerous withdrawl symptoms.

I did, however, manage to nab myself a Dalek keyring whilst I was there. Hooray.

Thankies in advance. :)

has anyone else noticed that if u close ur eyes then desmond in lost sounds exactly like david tennent and i dont just mean the accent!

reply

Which one is desmond? I'm confused...

I think I can just about be summed up by one smiley... But I couldn't find which.

reply

The guy who had to push the button before Jack and the others got down there. That's all I remember ... I haven't seen it for ages.

And to rosiemccotton: Yes, we do have HMV here. I actually got the DVD for my birthday! I was literally screaming and jumping up and down with happiness. One of the best things that's happened for a long time ... and I spent the next three or four hours watching the episodes. Mmmm ... Tennant.

He's so gorgeous it's probably not even fair anymore.

reply

Ruins the hotness? I beg to differ! Nothing so hot as watching him lick his fingers...

reply

Yeah I noticed that to. Brad is eating in like every scene, and yet niether of them put on weight. Must be a guy thing.

reply

[deleted]

David Tennants character only eats when he meets and falls in love with sarah parish. It is because he is comfort eating. He loves her but id decieving her by not telling her who he actually is, just leading her along.

reply

desmond's acent is cute, but i dont think its from the same part of scotland as davids (if it is from scotland, i get so confused by all the uk accents there are).

i think david tennants eating is adorable, and the when i noticed the habit i immediately thought of brad pitt in oceans 11 :P the bit in ep 2 when d.t is eating the icecream at the start is cute, and his lollipop and his cereal. never healthy food, which is odd.

i just watched it on rental from my local video shop, which never has ANYTHING, so youd probably be able to find it in real video shops too. either that or come to artarmon in australia...

reply

Hi, im a fellow australian tennant fan, but i missed out on Blackpool when it first showed on ABC, and its on UKTV at the moment but i'm going to miss the last episode so can anyone tell me what happens? And has Cassanova been shown in Australia yet either? It probably has, i discovered David last year. I used to live in england so im really jealous that they have him before we do! I heavily rely on Youtube but its eatingmy internet access! Sorry, this doesn't really relate to this thread. But i did notice the eating thing. It just makes him even more endearing hey.

reply

Hey, yeah did anyone catch how he always litters? I mean there has to a garbage can really nearby and since he is sort of a detector, isn't that against the laws??

reply

Yes - Casanova has been on tv, and on the UK channel - just a few weeks back (although looking at the date of this question you've probably seen it by now.)
If not - its available to buy from the ABC shop.

reply

Cassnova finished a week ago....and now they are showing DW on UKTV.....WOW!!!! David Tennant, John Barrowman and John Simm....what a great last 3 episodes of DW.....2's company but 3 is fantastic ;-)

reply

The ABC always plays the Christmas special before the new season starts. However, you could just watch it on Youtube if you wanted. I'm sure it's still there. And lol, get used to it. The only show we get before other countries is Neighbours. Hence why Australia has the highest download rate in the world.
