Could they do a second series where Danny actually gets caught as the killer? I re-watched the series over this past week and heard DC Blythe mention he would come back to the case one day. Do you think this was an off-hand comment, or do you think maybe they were planning a sequel series?

Although I think the characters of Blackpool-the-city, Ripley, Danny and maybe Hailey have 'legs' for another series, I'm not sure the others do. The Carlisle character seems to me a one trick pony (though he is a dish as played) and Natalie as written is inherently boring (although another dish). The ingenious Mr Peter Bowker could do anything with either of them, of course, but why would he?
As written, the character Ripley, and his rise, fall and rebirth is way more complex than any of the other characters. Does it make good enough television though for another series?
Well there was a one off follow up film but a sequel is now unlikely.
