Somebody please explain the ending

I'm not a Jew or an Israeli so I'm not familiar with the breaking bread tradition, but from what I gathered from some googling it's apparently an important tradition, religious even, to have. So I think it was very inapropriate that Ephraim refused it. Knowing that Ephraim himself is a through and through Jew, then why did he refuse Avner's invitation?
