I can not believe how many people feel sorry for the Dutch Assassin!

Ok, First off, This film Is about revenge! Who started it Probably depends upon what your religion is, or what history book you believe more. But Brass tacks, The killing goes on long after the credits roll and until people see the world for what it is, it will go on another 2,000 years. That being said, On to my main points.

The Israeli hit team is selected on the basis of a mission in defense of the realm so as to spread the message that Jews will not be helpless victims any longer. Blood will be spilled. Who spilled who's wine glass is really irrelevant in the grand scheme of the world. Because as History has shown, neither side can prove, nor will either concede to having drawn the sword first. Bitterness, Betrayal, espionage, ego, Arrogance and shame, The list goes on and on. All we know for sure is this team has a mission to make that message clear, Your going to pay for all the Jewish blood you spill.

In the course of such a mission, naturally, potential candidates for assassination will get wise to the other members getting whacked, and they in turn start trying to wack back so to speak. Insert Dutch woman! Who hired her? We may never know. Why was she hired? Someone, somewhere was pissed and wanted bloodshed. Was she dangerous? Yes, as we see she is capable of seducing men already beyond paranoid and emotional. (the fight's between Mossad agents over loyalty and integrity) Did she deserve to die? Yes, She plays games with peoples lives for profit, that carries with it certain risks.

Such a person, as anyone involved in espionage and such savage intricacies will surely realize, that there is no autonomy in the world of clandestine Deviant's. Too much animosity, too many shadows. You really don't know who is who, or what will come next. You only know a fraction of the puzzle at any one time. Hence, the danger which leads to fear, and emotion which allows paranoia to set in.

Flash forward through all the blood and guts and *beep* we become embroiled in a mire of emotional subterfuge. what is the true motive? Is Gilda Meir vain? Or patriotic or both?(hence the debate between characters contained therein as to whether her attendance or lack thereof was motivated by a loss of a sister, or pride. Both?)

All we really know, is Black September terrorists slaughtered an Israeli team, and in exchange the domino's start falling in a rather emphatic battle of the culturally inclined. Insert bribes, drugs, bartering and bloodshed and you have the introduction to just how slippery a slope the game really is. And it can sometimes be played by a lovely looking lady, with a rather distinguished perfume and a alluring physique.

She is a paid, highly trained Assassin, how else could she do her job?.?. More or less, the gaping wound she leaves upon the unclad corpse of the Ever Impassioned Carl? Does a temptress, who uses her body to manipulate and murder, deserve such sympathy from said audience simply because she has a vagina? NO!

Does a woman being a female entitle her? Most women would argue that point, because women have been held down for too long for their "gender" by people who look at them as weaker or deserving of sympathy rather than as an equal. The only thing that you could gain from feeling sorry for her is that she honestly was a tragic figure in her own right. She honestly believed she could deter two hungry wolves by unclasping her robe.

Proving what a temptress she is, I find it such a sad affair how many of you are calling the Mossad men such horrible things. You must be the ones who agree with Black September because there is nothing about this woman that is deserving of sympathy. She was a murderer as well, and in that capacity she is no more deserving of life than any of the Black September gunman who butchered the Israeli's on the tarmac.

Don't hide behind your upbringing, because you could have been brought up to believe the earth was flat. It wouldn't make you right! Don't hide behind who is right and wrong, because there is a matter of perspective. This woman is a killer, So are almost all the significant characters in this film in one capacity or another. So how then can you single them out, and sympathize with the Dutch woman?

Perhaps some of you might do well to put aside your biases and see things for what they are, rather than what your emotions tell you. Before you go off on some Tangent, I apologize in advance if my punctuation is not always spot on, But the point I'm trying to establish is easy enough to understand. Does anyone else agree with me about the Dutch woman?

reply

Yes.

I didn't get the sympathy for her either, both by the audience and the Mossad team. Especially since Karl was one of their team members/their friend. I guess part of it is the fact that killing her was pure revenge while some of the hits on the Black September guys were to send a message that Israel won't be messed with. Their was an exchange where Avner was asked why they used bombs and didn't just shoot people and he said that bombs sent a message.

reply

Well said!

reply

Yes I agree with you. And killing her was also post of the message that Israel won't be messed with.

It's not that surprising. First of all the negative reaction to a killing of a woman comes from very deep inside of us it is a very basic thing, that's how we are wired. Secondly she was not a legitimate target - she was not in their hit list. Third - she was not an ideological enemy - there was nothing personal - just business.

The Jews attacked first when they invaded Palestine in 1945 and stole and entire country, that remains occupied till this day. Black September wasn't terrorism, it was retaliation.

reply

I just think people felt sorry for her cause she was a woman and not on the list.

To me ,it falls into the "I saw what you did there" category. Speilberg obviously set out to make the victims of Mossads operation sympathetic, innocent, characters.
We dont see the plotters planning out the attack, they're simply people going about their lives. Take for instance the first guy. He's a multi lingual poet that goes about his business and gets shot with groceries in his arms as if he lived in some bad housing project.
The death of the Dutch girl came off as cruel, particicularly the use of bicycle air pump guns-these guys slept with guns. Why the need for modified weapons? Were they afraid of being pulled over on their bikes? Is that how it really went down?
And then we see the poor girl with holes in her chest giving her cat a last hug.

reply

The poor girl?
She is a hired assassin!
Those *beep* sexists...

I was fine about her getting killed. That's the trade she's elected to be in and she knows the risks and consequences of it very well. One day it caught up with her, as it often does I imagine. If she'd have been able to get to gun, she'd have shot them both dead - again, quite reasonably.
