Depp, Carter & Burton collectively ruin this movie

Depp and Carter are so understated and (particularly Depp) one note in their portrayal (does Depp's facial expression EVER change?) that they rob the film of any of the humor, pathos, and sympathy that are so important to their characterization. Todd and Lovett are two of the most iconic and memorable characters in the musical theater canon and Depp and Carter are so dull and one note (what's with all the whispering?) that you have no feelings for them whatsoever. This was all done to satisfy the wishes of Burton who felt that because they were singing roles the parts were already too large and everything needed to downplayed and flat. Had Burton NEVER seen a musical film? The exact OPPOSITE is true. Singing characters are so over the top in film that you have to bump up the level of performance so the acting and dialogue are on the same level as the singing. As it is, Depp and Carter are so dull that even their singing is uninteresting and unenergetic (did anyone tell them that "A Little Priest" was supposed to be FUNNY?)
And yet, other cast members fare much better, Spall and Rickman are particularly good, playing their roles with great complexity. But the best performance in the film is that of young Edward Sanders who you absolutely fall in love with. And his rendition of the song "Not While I'm Around" is absolutely heartbreaking. The best version of that song ever recorded.
This could have been really good but Depp, Carter and Burton really misunderstood the material and their approach ruins the entire movie.
Such a missed opportunity.

Agreed. Depp and Carter were miscast

I've loved this movie for years and Depp & Bonham Carter crack me up! I guess it's all about different tastes.

"By the sea Mr. Todd that's the life I covet. By the sea Mr. Todd, oh I know you'd love it."

speak for yourself jackass.

What would you prefer? Do you have any other ideas? I was first acquainted with Sweeney Todd on stage with a vastly different cast/context, but that has never made me think less of this fantastic cast. Sweeney and Mrs/ Lovett are lower key and it fits the director's vision.

both actors are great actors. Proven over and over again. If anything, it's an issue with the director.

While I didn't particularly care for either of their voices in this film, I thought Depp gave a decent performance, and thought Carter was flat out excellent. She was over the top and funny throughout the majority of the film, but flipped things around by giving a subdued and touching performance in the last third.

You’re kidding, right?

“Over the top” would hardly be the term I use to describe her performance in this movie.

The 3 of them are the reason why this movie was a success and the only reason I watched it.

Depp was so bad he didn't get nominated for an Oscar did it......
Sondheim hired Helena he thought she was great, good enough for me.

If it wasn't for Burton we wouldn't have had his masterpiece, the version they were developing before Burton has far less songs and wasn't going to be a blood bath.

“Sondheim hired Helena he thought she was great, good enough for me.”

Sondheim also liked the new Woke Side Story and considered it superior to the 1961 movie so I do not trust his judgment. So not good enough for me.

"the version they were developing before Burton has far less songs and wasn't going to be a blood bath."

Do you have a reliable source for that?

Because whoever told you that had to be lying or smoking something. Sweeney Todd the stage musical had a lot MORE songs and was already a bloodbath, Tim Burton just cut half the score because he is a self-admitted musical hater and didn't want to deal with something he thought was out of his league. Which again begs the question of why he took up the project in the first place or why he didn't hire a musical director to deal with the songs.
