What's Reuben doing to Nanny's hair in her bedroom at home and on her bed in the hospital?

Having your hair straightened like that tends to dry it out, and although the scalp usually produces enough oils to keep your hair healthy, sometimes it's not enough. Some black people grease their scalps to make up for that. Doing someone else's hair is also a way to show love and affection, regardless of ethnicity.

Exactly. Some black people tend to scalp dryness and this technique of massaging oil into another hair and scalp with fingers or a comb is a gesture of endearment, fondness and care. I have experienced it -- it is wonderful indeed!

Great memories for me as well! There is nothing more soothing than when someone scratches and massages your scalp.

Remember in The Color Purple, Shug Avery, mentions how Celie....."Scratches out my head while I was ailing."

Yes....Dixie Peach, Blue Magic, Royal Crown, and Three Flowers...Hair Grease!

I even have the wonderful, distinct memory of my grandmother, Arzetta Dilihunt Coleman; oiling my scalp and hair with a product created, and manufactured by the company and business founded by the historical, legendary, black hair care pioneer, entrepreneur and first self-made female millionaire......Madam C.J. Walker.

"OOhhhooo....I'M GON' TELL MAMA!"
