Black Mass - 8/10. The Depahted - 5/10. Live with it, bitches.

Now that I've watched Black Mass I can easily say:

Black Mass >>> The Depahted.

The Depahted is easily Scorsese's worst film, out of 18 that I've seen. Sorry, but at least Black Mass doesn't have a bunch of random, completely nonsensical killings at the end. At least for Black Mass, they didn't say "Hey, you know what would be great...let's just kill everybody in the fcking movie at the end. People will love that!" And most of all, Black Mass didn't have Dignam, one of the most annoying characters in the history of film. I wanted to kill just about everyone in The Retahded Depahted. But I ESPECIALLY wanted Dignam to get it. And what happens? Of course! He's the only one that lives.

So, you don't analyze the movies but base everything on one character, who was meant to be hated, and "random" killings. It's a f#cking mafia-flic, what did you expect? Departed: 10/10 Black Mass: 7/10

But here's the thing - is Michael Corleone a good person? Is he meant to be admired or loved? How about Jimmy Conway? For that matter, how about Whitey Bulger?

So why when I watch The Godfather or Goodfellas or Black Mass (or hundreds of other films with characters that are "meant to be hated") do I not spend the entire time angrily wanting to curb stomp Pacino or DeNiro or Depp?

Look, it's not just Wahlberg. This movie has tons of problems. It's an absolute mess. I'm glad Scorsese finally got his Oscar, I just wish it had been for one of his good films.

As far as I recall, to admire and to love are the same.

I hate Wahlberg as an actor, but in the Departed he played excellently, in my opinion.

This movie has tons of problems.

So, what are the exact problems? Jack Nicholson and DiCaprio were amazing, the soundtrack was great and a suspenseful story.

I'm glad Scorsese finally got his Oscar, I just wish it had been for one of his good films.

It is by far not Scorsese's best, but still a near perfect film, in my opinion.

I agree. I haven't seen Black Mass yet, but I love The Departed. Really well done. Martin Scorsese is one of the all time great directors. The cast was perfect, DiCaprio and Damon were standouts among all the great actors. It was the first time I saw Vera Farmiga, she is terrific. Just a great movie.
