DVD with English Subs?

I'm a big fan of Shunji Iwai and I've been trying to find a dvd of this movie with english subtitles, but it seems that it doesn't exist... I became so desperate that I had to watch it with Chinese subtitles instead. And since Chinese isn't my first language, I didn't fully get some of the dialogue, but I still enjoyed the movie.

I'm just curious as to what exactly the student photographer said to Hana at the photo exhibition that made her decide to make up with Alice... If anyone could enlighten me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone knows of any DVD version with English subs, please let me know too! Thanks!!

my English is no good,My DVD has only Japanese subs.
but,I try to translate the student photographer's words

Are you still quarreling with the Alice?
It is no good to quarrel.
Do you know "a flower mansion"?
There was a house which it was being called "a flower mansion" .
The child of that house was looking at the outside from the window when it passed through the front of that house on the way we came back from school.
It felt all to be uncanny. Then, that house was being called "a flower mansion".
My mother said. hAs for that girl, one day came to dislike school suddenly. Then, stopped going to outside from the house no less than one step.
One day Cthat girl came through for the practice of the ballet.
When we met, she was an ordinary good child.
Did Alice invite you to the ballet?
It is no good to quarrel.

No, as far as I know, there isn't a DVD out there with English subs. Unless there was a miracle and americans finally realized what a genius Shunji Iwai was and finally decided to release his movies on DVD here.

I saw it in the theatres when I was in Japan and understood most, but not all of it. When I watch it on DVD now, I watch it with Japanese subtitles and I get the rest now.

Am I the only one who has realized that the summary for that Hong Kong DVD at http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/18399.html is just blantantly wrong?

reply

Yeahh, I noticed too... it's totally off from what the movie is about... makes me wonder if the person who writes these summaries actually watch the movies themselves...

reply

Gosh that's wrong! It's got enough detail that I can't imagine that they didn't watch the movie, but is so horribly off that you've gotta wonder what movie they were watching... Maybe they watched the non-subtitled version without being able to understand Japanese... ;)

I recently purchased a dvd with English subtitles from Panorama and it says that its in the "wrong region" or something along the lines whenever I try to play or load it. Do you know why this is?

reply

DVDs have regions... (this I suppose is to prevent high quality DVD copies of movies from being shown or sold in countries where the movie isn't even out in theaters yet thereby reducing theater sales)...

the US is region 1... Japan is region 2... much of the rest of Asia is region 3...

If the region code on the DVD doesn't match the code on your DVD player then you won't be able to play the DVD on that player without effort...

There sometimes are things you can do to your DVD player to get it to recognize other regions... you can also buy regionless players that will play DVDs from any region...

And sometimes you can find multi-region, or all-region DVDs...

In any case this is something you must be very careful of when purchasing DVDs outside your own country...

Its a rotten system, especially for foreign movie lovers (especially in places like the US which as a whole dislikes foreign movies), but that's the way it is...

reply

darn that sucks, but thanks a lot for your help. hopefully i'll be able to figure something out so i can fix the encoding for the region or something to watch it.

Hi Miek,

I saw Hana And Alice too at the IFFR. It's so funny and touching, indeed. Try Boudisque in Amsterdam for the dvd - I got my All About Lily Chou-Chou disc there.

I wonder if directors love the Chinese too...

reply

Well if someone would make official release in China... :)

Shunji Iwai is very famous among young people in China. Guess how they get his movies? Anyway, good stuff always find their ways.

Suncoast/FYE/Coconuts/your local music-movie store is able to order it, with English Subtitles, Region 1, for about $20-$25. At least that's where I got mine. It's pressed, not bootleg, has a 'making of' special feature. Apparently it got licensed. Well, that's where I got mine at least :) They also have AALCC available.

I think I got the same version as you and I borrowed it from the city's public library.
