Why did they go with Rhiana Griffith, Jack from Pitch Black, for this project, but not for the movie Chronicles of Riddick? Was it purely because she looked too young? From the 1 picture in her bio, she actually looks quite mature now, perfect for the movie. I'm just confused....
shareThat's a good question, but the studio isn't talking. It appears that something went very, very wrong during casting... and when the fans found out and raised a stink, this may have been done in an effort to make amends. But it's really unclear. We'll probably never know exactly what did happen; all I can hope is that it's a good sign the part might be given back to her in any future movies. But that's Hollywood for you, so there's no way of knowing.
shareThere have been a few articles around the 'net saying that Universal has decided not to make any sequels, for the big screen that is, to "Chronicles..." The movies poor box office results was cited as the main reason. BUT!!! The video game "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay" is kicking mad booty on the X-Box and therefore any sequels that were planned for the movie may end up as a video game. In that case, there is a very good chance that Rhiana could be cast to do voice work on the video game as Jack/Kyra.
Granted Alexa Davalos was Kyra in the "Chronicles" movie, she was not the voice of Jack in the "Dark Fury" short film. So there is a chance for her to reappear in the games.

I hope that Rhiana might appear in the video game sequels as Jack. Rhiana is apparently willing to do anything related to PB/TCoR. Alexa already said she is primarily interested in being a film actress and wasn't particularly interested in doing the "Kyra" Tv spin off (which I doubt will happen now). I find it doubtful that she would want to be in the video games, even if it was offered to her. I think if Vin has any say in it, Rhiana will be in the video game sequels if Jack is in them. Although ... if they decided to put the Kyra character in the video games instead and Alexa didn't want to voice her, would they then go with Rhiana and make Kyra look like her? Just a whimsical notion. :-)
shareMaking Kyra look more like Rhiana could be done. Rhiana is a dark blonde and Alexa was more like a light brunette, I don't think changing the eye color would be a big deal. Besides they went with brown eyes in "Dark Fury" anyway.

I believe she wasn't used because Riddick takes place 10 years after PB and Rhiana is only like 3-4 years older. BUT Dark Fury takes place right after PB, therefore, she (or atleast her voice) would be around the right age.
TCoR is 5 years after PB. I thought part of the reason was physically Alexa was more prepared for the action-oriented role.
shareYep, TCOR takes place five years after Pitch Black. In PB Jack was 13, Ms. Griffith just 19 so she would have been the perfect age to reprise Jack/Kyra.
Nope, Ms. Davalos had no prior special training in hand to hand combat that anyone knows about. In fact, she said in one interview that while she was on "Angel" they quickly rehersed the fight scenes then shot them. No one is exactly sure why Ms. Davalos got the part and Ms. Griffith didn't.

Supposedly, Kyra is seventeen. Alexa looks considerably older than seventeen (she's twenty-one, but looks older than that to me). Looking at her, I can see how somebody might think TCoR took place 10 years after Pitch Black.
Alexa has been quoted as saying that she got five minutes of training before her fight scenes on "Angel." She said she became athletic during the filming of TCoR.

shareActually, the most credible rumor I've heard to date (from someone with industry connections) indicates that Rhiana in fact won the part... blowing away Alexa completely in terms of acting and fighting ability during the auditions. If the information I was given is to be believed, though, things fell apart after that, and it had a lot to do with money. If my source is right, Davalos wasn't the better option; she was the cheaper option.
You get what you pay for, is my only response to that... Universal decided to do things on the cheap when it came to the character who would be Riddick's prime motivation for reviving his humanity, while wasting buckets of money on some overpriced actress they'd then CGI beyond recognition anyway. That's Hollywood for you.

(SP)!! Her character dies at the end of CoR so unfortunately Rhiana wouldn't be able to reprise her role again. Atleast in the future tense (unless they showed flashbacks)
Not all of us are convinced that Kyra was actually Jack. Kyra misquotes Jack's signature line and fights as well as a Furyan, which is a little unusual for a 17-year-old human girl, among other things. If Kyra isn't actually Jack, then Rhiana could return as Jack. There are a lot of ways to make her return seem plausible.

Personally, I'm gravely doubtful there will be a second movie. Universal has already said they won't make a sequel to "Van Helsing," which has made $80 million beyond its production and marketing costs. TCoR has not done nearly that well, just recently making back its production cost.
Also, it seems as if Alexa Davalos has her sights set on being a movie star. She has already said she's not interested in doing the SciFi Channel spin off TV series, should they actually make it. What's to say she will stay with the TCoR trilogy if she has a better part lined up if/when Universal wants to film the next one? It could be that to have Alexa as Kyra at all, they would have to minimize the part, opening the door for Jack to return.
I think if there is another movie made and they do bring Jack back as a separate character from Kyra, why would they cast yet a third actress to play her if Rhiana was available and wanted the role?

I loved Rhiana as Jack. I was so looking forward to seeing her a bit older in TCoR because I always kinda had a crush on her. And then I saw Alexa and the "Kyra" character. I can't say I was very impressed. Kyra sucked and Alexa doesn't hold a candle to Rhiana.
I wanted to meet interesting and stimulating people of an ancient culture... and kill them.
From what I heard, Diesel had her set for the part, but said she had to toughen up in like 3 weeks before shooting beganh. She even took up kickboxing, but then the role went to Alexis (I think that's her name.) Too bad, I liked Rhiana..
shareYou're right! There was a newspaper article about Rhiana training hard for her part in Chronicles. I agree with alot of what people say.. TCoR is more fantasy than the solid, gritty sci-fi you see in Pitch Black. This was 'their' first mistake. Their second was bringing in a 2-bit substitute to play a role which also has been substituted (Ie. Is different from the character that's meant to be represented); so far as even altering the name to Kyra.
If they make another TCoR; it would be feasible to deem Kyra an imposter and bring back Jack! They REALLY blew it there, and they know it. Rhiana's character is as much liked as Vin's, and if I knew that the wrongs would be made right further down the line, id be quick to support TCoR, as would many others.

Yeah, Rhiana had to try out for the part, and she wasn't as buff as Alexa (as she had only had 3 weeks to get in shape). So, even though Vin really wanted Rhiana cast, Alexa got the part. I'm okay with that, I wasn't at first, but I think Miss Davalos really proved herself!

I really hope that if they do another TCOR movie that they'd bring Jack back!! I liked her a lot in PB. shareso if this is true and they do make another movie including the underverse then maybe there is some way to bring kyra/jack back and they will reinstate rhiana to the role. i think this line would be much more plausible than "kyra is an imposter" which could be construed as a cheap, badly written twist in order to bring a fan favorite character back.

The other girl...Alexa.*i think that's her name* has said that she didn't want to do a "kyra" spin off ...b/c she was done with tv. but that she would be more than happy to return as Jack in other chronicals movies.
As of a few days ago...Vin did say that TCOR took about 4 to 5 years to make...and we will be seeing "The chronicals of Riddick: The underverse" before the time it took to make TCOR. So, there will be 2 more sequils to the movie.And in an interview Alexa said that she has already been told that they are making TCOR sequil now.
In the directors cut on TCOR...if you listen to the commentary..after Kyra dies, Towhy says....something along the lines of, " Necromongers that get killed do go to the Underverse. And Riddick is planning on going to the Underverse in the next movie. So that plays a BIG part in who we kill off in this movie." that's not word for word *except the last part about...playing a big part in who we kill off..* but, that's the jist of it.
To add a change of pace, I thought Alexa did fine as Kyra.
But I actually like that they cast Rhianna in this animated short as opposed to Alexa.
Dark Fury takes place very soon after Pitch Black...so Jack is more or less the exact same age. The Chronicles of Riddick takes place 5 years later...so there is a change in Jack's appearance, voice, and etc.

Rhiana Griffith was not enough sexy. It may sound bitter but that's the truth. If you want to make a successful movie in Hollywood, you have to pick up sexy actors and actresses. It's a necessary condition (not sufficient though - a good scenario in another one).
