The Ending (Spoilers)

Hey there

Well I watched it last night on Film4, I enjoyed the film and thought it was rather good although I didn't really get the ending. Kinda sounds weird I know but it just sorta cut to black if you will...
You see that guy sinking at the end and Marc just watched and then it ends, apart from the sweeping scenes of the woods and wilderness and then that last scream at the end. Could anyone like explain their interpretation of the film ending?

Thanks.

reply

Right, well i'm not a 100% sure on this, but it sounded to me like Marc said "I loved you" to whateverhisname as he was sinking into the swamp. I may have misheard but if that was the case, well I dunno.. I guess you could say he'd reached a level of insanity at which he accepted the identity he was forced into.

reply

Do you think he survived the ordeal and got out of the woods and wilderness and made it back to normal surroundings or that he wasted away out in the forests and marshes?

reply

i assume he wasted away out in the forests and marshes.

If you notice, through the whole film, everyone is trying to get something from Marc he can't give them. He can do nothing but look at them with pity, and eventually horror. The old woman and the nurse both want him as a lover, Boris wants him to help find his dog/later thinks marc is his dog, Bartel and the townsfolk think he is Gloria, etc. At the end of the movie as Marc is escaping, the old man chasing him falls into the bog. Marc goes back, not to help but to watch him die. As usual, the old man addresses him as Gloria, says he loves him and wonders why she left him, etc. Marc finally, for the first time in the movie, relents and gives someone what they want, by telling the old man he loves him, as Gloria.

reply

I agree. I don't think he said "I loved you" because he went insane and believed he was Gloria. I think he was just telling the man what he wanted to hear.

I was little confused at this though. I thought that after all they had put him through he'd say something horrible. I couldn't figure out why he'd try to make the man happy before he died. In the end I just figured that Marc knew the man's death was inevitable, so why hurt him anymore? He was such a good person that even after what they did, he still had the decency to pretend.

But alindon18 phrased it well.

As for his fate, I think he most likely would have just wasted away. That was a lot of ground to cover and unless someone came across him and picked him up, I'd say he was screwed.

reply

I was confused as to why he said 'I loved you' at the end. If I'd've been Marc, stood there, in a random forest, with a *beep* dead woman's dress on, and some evidently insane man sinking in what seems to be a giant fat of chocolate sauce (wow! What a way to go! Lmao, Weightwatchers'll love me), I'd've got that gun that he'd put infront of him, and shot him right there and then with it. The stupid babbling idiot. Fancy, a man who's put you through so much torture. He first of all ruins your van, he lies to you saying there's a mechanic coming when there's not, he shaves your bl**dy head, he makes you wear his dead wife's clothes, he handcuffs you, beats you regularly, then invites the entire village round for dindins (i.e, your anus), and then you tell him you loved him, regardless of wether it's what he wanted to hear or not! I wouldn't've cared less of the man had've suffered at the hands of Saddam, I wouldn't've told him that ever.

Persoally anyway, I think the ending was really, really week. I rated this film 4/10 because of it. The film all the way up 'till then was quite good, subtitled well and scripted well, and everything, yet the end seemed rushed. You know like when authors get writers block, and some of them pull little ideas they've stored out of a hat, to give them ideas in what to put in their latest novel, well it seemed that. Random. I mean I was expecting the ending to involve some horrific death of Bartel, and maybe the entire village, and then Marc getting away. But with the ending of him drowning in that vat of chocolate sauce, and then the film finishing with scenes of the forest, it really ruined it.

Agreed. When he walked over to the man I was sure he was gonna shoot him. I mean, the gun was lying right there.

And yeah, I was expecting the ending to be a kind of revenge thing. Like, Bartel would end up getting what he deserved.

reply

havent you all noticed though, that the ending was entirely unexpected, we all didnt see it coming, perhaps that was the intended effect?

once bitten - twice shy!

reply

The ending is just for ourselves to make our own mind up. The director did not know what happened himself at the end!

The ending is like that just so the audience don't get some big pay-off at the end with everything explained to them like in Hollywood, its an ambigious ending and we can think what we like.

I think he had gone slightly insane with horror but still knew he was marc, not gloria. He took satisfaction out of watching the guy die and maybe whispered i loved you as he was just in a crazy mood! Im guessing he would have made a run for it but he looked so weak and was in the middle of no-where with swamps, i cant see how he would have got out alive!

reply

im so over endings not explaining everything because they want to be new/nothollywood/indie....

mm over it, i want to be told what happens.

reply

they broke one of the major rules of film writing by showing the audience a gun and having nothing come of it. Maybe they were trying to create suspense by having the gun right there ar Marc's feet and wanted the audience to wait for him to shoot the man, only to have him do, basically, the opposite.

reply

i would have stole his stocking cap before he went under.

The man that sank into the bog hadn't tortured him, Bartel was the one who did all those terrible things and the man who sank into the bog killed Bartel. Marc had no reason to hate that guy other than the fact that he was organizing a gang rape which never happened. I think part of the reason you don't like this movie is you got Bartel and Gloria's lover mixed up.

We all need to convert to the fetishism of FEET!!!

reply

i think the organizing of a gang rape is PLENTY GOOD reason.

This man sinking to his death in the marshes wasn't Bartel who kidnapped Marc and turned him into Gloria.

exactly my thoughts.

and he did say "i love you" in the end. twice.

reply

I think my explanation for the ending pretty much covers all the why's (check above). I haven't heard one put forward that makes more sense than that. If anyone has one, I'd be glad to hear it.

Oh, and it wasn't Bartel sinking into the bog. It was the leader of the villagers. Bartel was killed when the house was sieged.

reply

Well I did consider at the end, that the camera was moving as if it were in a car, and I thought maybe I heard the sound of a car as well...maybe Marc was in the car, maybe it was just a car passing by and seeing nothing but desolation long after the fact. I am not sure what that brief pre-credits jaunt through the woods after the sinking scene is meant to be.

I did have the feeling that Marc was a bit unstoppable (against all odds), so if he survived all of that and was still walking, he probably made it out eventually.

Did anyone else have the feeling they cut out his tongue? He was spitting/drooling blood through the whole soup eating scene.

reply

I assumed he was having jaw/tooth troubles from being bashed in the head.

reply

1)The guy is walking after Marc, and then all of a sudden there's snow on the ground and frost everywhere? WTF?

2)Who was that guy? It wasn't Bartel was it? You first see him in the bar, and then at the end when they go to Bartel's house, and then as he's sinking in the pond he's acting like the dude who they call Gloria for whatever reason, is all of a sudden his long lost love?

3)Why do they keep calling him a "she". It's like they are a village of homosexuals (by choice or by lack of female)and any outsider is a "she" in the sexual context.

reply

Yeah, this movie had the worst ending I have seen in a long time. Marc was limping through the woods at the most frustratingly slow pace and he wasn't even hurt enough to justify his dumb swaggering. I like movies with downbeat finish-it-yourself endings but this was just monumentally terrible.

I remember saying to the screen that Sally from TCM was 5 times the man that Marc was. What a woosy. This movie stunk. But I give it points for the pub dance. The pub dance was cool.

What you mean after being tormented for days and brutally raped in the ass?

Let's see you walk straight after you've been anally blasted.

I don't believe he was ever actually raped, was he?

And he was acting goofy before then.

reply

Yeah, Marc was raped by the guy who had the pig on the leash. The father threw Marc on the table, while saying: "You left me like a slut, now I'll
(we'll) treat you like a slut". The guy/son pulled his pants down, pulled Marc's dress up, and began thrusting.

There was a lot going on (Bartel shooting one of the guys, the father shooting back at Bartel, Boris yelling about Bella, etc), so it was easy to miss.

I didn't hear Marc scream, so I'm guessing Bartel got to him first.

But they were hiring that day...The brothas walked in with guns, came out with jobs!

After being beaten several times, having your leg caught in a wire snare, being nailed to wood through your wrists, raped, wading through water, mud and snow in what seems to be the middle of winter in a dress, I'm sure sixpackrt would be sprinting like an Olympic runner. Of course he's most likely immune to concussion and hypothermia.
