Who was the girl?

Ok, so, I checked this movie out from my local library. I usually like fantasy, and the back of the box compared it to LotR and other such movies, so I took the chance. I'm very glad I only spend .75 to rent it. It's really a horrible movie.

I did watch the first 30 minutes or so, before my gag reflex caused me to stop watching it. I couldn't catch names, so I'm trying to figure out who Ashmore's love interest at the beginning of the film is. The girl he wrestles and throws into the lake.

I thought it was Katharine Isabelle, but then I saw pictures of Erin Karplunk, and I'm not entirerly sure. If it IS Karplunk, who did Isabelle play, and where in the movie did she appear?

Thanks in advance!

Well, if the love-interest's name was Diana, that's Erin Karplunk. I didn't pay enough attention to catch that much. Katharine Isabelle played Yarrow, Vetch's sister. If you didn't get that far, Vetch is Sparrowhawk's friend from the school on Roke.

Quite frankly, you really shouldn't have paid anything to watch it. It's really not worth it. However, look for the books in your library. Author is Ursula K. LeGuin, the first book is "A Wizard of Earthsea." They're not that difficult to read, and they are much better than the movie. If you like fantasy, this is perfect for you.

Actually, I thought the movie was better than the books. Much more enjoyable and interesting. The books had a tendency to get boring.

I agree about the books being a little boring. Definitely overrated. I read a good amount of fantasy but for some strange reason I never got around to reading the Earthsea series. After just finishing one of Robin Hobb's series, reading Earthsea is completely mediocre. The mini series doesn't seem to get much appreciation either, so I think I'll skip it.

Try the books again when you are older. They are without a doubt the most beautiful and insightful books I've ever read.

Movie better than the books?... ha. ha ha ha. HA HA HA! AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAA!! ::dissolves into uncontrollable fits of hysterical laughter::

Beautiful and insightful? I seem to remember it had halfway decent prose, but insightful? I don't mean to bash the novel too badly, it just wasn't for me. And I disagree with all the praise it still receives to this day.

I suggest you visit your local library. There are many many great books out there. As far as fantasy goes, try some other stuff. Be careful wading through all the garbage, but Robin Hobb, Scott R. Bakker, or George R. Martin are all good for more modern stuff.

I've read widely and diversely in my time. A Wizard of Earthsea is a book that just struck a chord with me personally. It's short and an easy read - practically a novella - but I've re-read it more than any other book in my life as it reverberates with subtle wisdom.

I don't doubt that to some it may be nothing more than a diverting genre effort, but the hard core of devotees out there show that I'm not alone :-)
