Who is Laurence?

Saw the movie last night and enjoyed it, but can't figure out who Laurence is and how she was connected to the other charactors? When Lila went upstairs, her boyfriends picture was on the nightstand, but no explanation of why. Appreciate the help.

Laurence was Lila's boyfriend's sister.

That's what I thought but Stepehn Holden of the MYTimes says the boyfriend is an only child. But Holden gets other facts wrong about the movie and he is not one of my favorite reviewers so I do not give him a lot of credence.
