I must say I don't really mind this film, all in all, but there is one scene that makes me groan inwardly whenever I watch it.
When the crowd is streaming toward the ferry to escape the tripods which are coming to kill or enslave them, Spielberg has the Tony Bennett song, If I Ruled The World" playing on loudspeakers on the jetty.
I mean, really!
I always think 'Who is the insensitive prick playing that song at a time like this?' whenever I see that scene.
Definitely isn't the scene that makes me groan the most. That would be any scene involving the kids, mostly Dakota Fanning. The scene when she's in the car screaming her head off for her mum is awful. She goes from being mature enough to give her father advice on getting through to Robbie, to screaming like a little petulant baby when they're fleeing the scene of an alien attack and her father is trying to get them out of danger.
That too, yes. I must admit I never noticed that but it's obvious, really. She's painful, isn't she.
