Great film!

I watched this film last night on DVD. I thought the story line was great! The special effects were amazing. How did they do that....buildings collapsing, the tripods coming out of the ground? I hardly recognized Yul Vasquez.

I especially liked the ending where.....

Tom Cruise's is reunited with his son Robbie.

I agree. I think its an underrated film that gets unfairly criticised. The first act is amazing. I can´t say I care for the ending or the Robbie character though.

I wouldn't call it great, but it's better than its reputation suggests. There are some gripping and tense moments. Tom Cruise isn't bad. The visual effects remain astonishing for a 2005 movie. When the first tripod rises out of the ground and attacks the onlooking crowd, it's a frightening scene. The 9/11 parallels kind of work for the most part.
But there are still some problems that Spielberg can't distract the audience from. First off, both the son and daughter were and remain very annoying characters. And it does drag in the second half.

It was pretty damn good, up until the end. 110 minutes of amazing atmosphere building up fear, and panic, and dread until you're thinking all hope for humanity is lost... and then out of nowhere all the aliens just keel over and die. Because germs. End credits. What a gyp.

This is just the movie being faithful to the book written by H.G. Wells in 1897, which ended the same way.

It's pretty good and quite accurate in the portraiyal of teen behavior.
