Anyone seen it yet?

I thought it was brilliant, but that might just be me?

reply

I saw it just yesterday and I quite liked it. It makes you think, anyway.

reply

pretty f'n fantastic. i feel like his animation has blended in with the "real world" better and better as his films go in. The two truly co-exist in this one.

reply

I concur. Not only do I think this is Svankmajer's best work, but it's one of the best Czech films I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a few.

A masterpiece, in my humble opinion.

Any idea when/if a theatrical/dvd release in the States is planned. I was in prague last fall and would love to go back... but is it crazy to travel 6000 miles for a movie?

I don't know either, but I can't wait to see this film. I'm travelling to Prague in a couple of months... hopefully I can catch it there, and find out more about its release.

reply

good news!! new entertainment weekly summer preview lists the film as coming out in august in the states under the title lunacy. cannot wait to see this, svankmajer is a genius!

Just saw it today at Tribeca Film Festival. May 1 2006.
There is another showing on May 4th.
Below is the link to the movie.

It might become outdated when the festival is over though.
Very good film.

Agreed, I saw it last night at Tribeca and it was very compelling. For some reason, only in mood and tone, "Lunacy" reminded me of "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, Her Lover." I suppose you can say it carries the same mood.

Also, "Lunacy" has some really fanciful animation. Very good stuff.

I'm another TFF'er who caught the film yesterday. It was awesome! quite a surprise (I haven't really seen any other czech movie before, much less something from Jan). While it was grotesque, and some parts were very heavy with his "message", I liked how everything clicked together at the end. In fact, I actually felt refreshed afterwards, and even went with my fiancee to eat at a japanese bbq nearby!

great stuff.

I saw the film a few weeks ago in Prague. Given the long long speeches in it, I was utterly amazed to be told that Svankmajer routinely turns over without sync sound. Either way, it's a true classic and I'd urge you all to see it.

BTW I found this website which indicates the dvd will be released on the 17th May:

Brilliant! I thoroughly enjoyed this film, brought a few of my Czech friends whom all carried praise exiting the theatre. I must say, the sequence with the Chicken from living to eaten; so well done. Interesting blend of Poe and Sade Narratives. Highly recommended.

I just saw it and it sucked all the way - as a horrormovie. As a mindbending psychological drama it was way better. But it still sucked =)

I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and will be seeing it at the MIFF next Friday (Oct. 20th). Looking forward to it; from what I've heard, the film is going to be very good...how many directors can really make Poe come to life on film?

reply

Ok Now I have seen it and I thought it was quite good, though the first 30-45 minutes were perhaps a bit sloppily edited...a lot of extra scenes that maybe could have been left on the editing room floor. I saw it at 9:45pm after a long workday and I was quite tired by the end. Overall, though, I was delighted by the animation (the tongues, especially) and I really enjoyed the Marquis' performance. A very shocking/sad ending, and I was very glad that I honestly could not unravel the entire film by the first few minutes into it. Not until very near the end did it dawn on me that this poor young man will be doomed. An excellent blend of politics, social commentary and drama. Maybe my favorite part was the whole burial escapade...pretty funny and a clever statement toward religion, etc. Great film; I'd see it again, though perhaps maybe an earlier showing.

I've looked everywhere for this film in the UK but no luck. I can't find any DVD release of it either. Any ideas? Thanks. I have all his films and shorts but haven't seen Sileni (Lunacy).

reply

In the magazine Entertainment Preview that the video store owner gets at the place I work said its comming out sometime in February. I think it was the 12th or something. It still has a little while :P but I can't wait, I love this sort of stuff.

reply

Anyone know when/if this is available in the UK>?

reply

It's opening theatrically in June, but don't expect a multiplex release!

reply

Lunacy is being screened in the NFT in london for all of june

reply

I still don't get why this film is considered a horror film.

reply

Doesn't Svankmajer define it so in the introduction?

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

reply

Indeed. I suppose he means it in a broader sense though (that the implications of the film's ideas are horrifying). It certainly does have its dark moments, although certainly a million miles from the horror genre as conventionally defined.

Having said that, can anyone confidently state that Hollywood gore-porn flicks are more 'horror' films than this?

reply

try under the title "lunacy" in amazon.com.

Well, I've just added Daisies to my list. Good Czech movies are always a must.

reply

I've just seen this.
Film has impessed me very much. I have looked a lot of Svankmayer's films but this is really impressive.
