treatment 13

so any ideas on what the final surgery is?

ill be boring and guess its gelding/castration

reply

Know what? I had assumed it was castration as well, keeping with the progression of removing things...but I just now thought maybe it was a lobotomy. That would be a fitting final treatment for patients incapable of being cured- who were so "sick" that no balance could be achieved.

reply

Others have said it's removal of the genitals, pointing to the treatment cards in the title sequence, but who is to say that the cards reveal the treatments in order?

I also think a lobotomy would be kind of appropriate... perhaps representing the general brain removal that goes on in the world today (encouraging others to think for you?) Drawing a long bow, perhaps, but this film is definitely a comment for today's power structures and political ideas (as Svankmajer himself says in the intro), so I wonder if it couldn't be compatible with all that.

I believe it is amputation, and I think it was both his legs not one. As when they show him in his bed he is covered and looks like a stump covered in the bed.

Remember he was known to escape, and the director said oh they didn't get far. What better way to make sure he never gets away again than to cut his legs off.

In the treatment cards on the DVD their was one were a woman is getting her arm cut of and one of someone getting their leg cut off.

Forgot to add Dominic when walking in a circle outside, looked like he had gotten a toe cut off as his entire foot was bandaged and he was dragging the foot that was bandaged as he walked with the crutches.

i also thought of castration first. but number ten was removal of the eyes. and that probably is a bit worse than castration. and that's 3 steps further.

Where are you, Mount Everest? Give me some Everest.

reply

clearly castration-
the cards, Charlotte will help of course, it's the 'exception' made for the Marquis to skip a few treatments.

And how could you justify castration being a less heinous act than removing the eyes?

reply

my initial thought was castration and that's what i'm pretty sure it was, especially since there was so much focus on sexual gratification throughout the film.

reply

it cant really be castration since the dude wasnt involved into any sex at all....it would seem lobotomy.

reply

it wasn't a lobotomy, that was mostly done in the us, anyway.

reply

Yeah, but it was invented in Portugal, Europe. Besides it's popular in general culture, and Svankmajer wasn't exactly going for realism either. Lobotomy was the first thing I thought, but it's anyone's guess really.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

reply

Hmm, I'm wondering if it's the guys that all jumped to the castration conclusion and women to the other, as, well. Guys hold their penises in higher regard...
I missed the opening sequence, see if I can find it online.

I think the 13th treatment is all the 12 treatments combined, removing eyes, castration etc all of em

reply

That's an interesting concept, but how could you do the 12 previous treatments at once, if there were some already done?
