"Lost" is a good movie, and obviosly a very underrated one. It is hard to believe the low rating it has in comparison with the high ratings given to undeniably crappy movies at the same Mac'Donalds rental stations (Man From Earth, Final Contact, Sunshine, Condemned, etc). A good movie deals with realistic people in not so ordinary situations.
First the good news, and why the four of the five points made by homercles don't even begin to make sense.
1.the plan was never well concocted. And in real life, real crooks are stupid. I grew up with enough. And just as in real life, the thugs were too proud and arrogant to accept advice and planning from the better educated people. This is extremely true to life. After the robbery, when the plan is ended, as in true life, with true life crooks, there is no plan. The two bank workers obviously wanted a plan, but were thwarted by the arrogance of the thugs, which also made the two bankers act erratically and emotionally.
2.A shiny car in the sticks may have stood out 50 years ago, but no more, not by any stretch of the imagination. The richest people in America today aren't the white collar workers, but the people who took shop in high school and who dropped out and learned real trades. No, no car would stand out any where, except for a poor city area.
3. Relying on a random person was preferable to someone who appeared for a reason he couldn't be sure of. He knew the lady was at a car rental agency, and while it was obvious to the viewer that someone was setting him up and moving signs around, and she was the most obvious selection, it would not just jump into your head in a live situation while your driving lost and trying to find your way. Remember, the hero didn't know he was a character in a film.
4. The littering after being stopped by the cop was one of the few weak points of the movie. I didn't buy that. It was too Indiana Jones like. Then, again, it was a spare of the moment decision. Still, this is one point I agree with homer on. It doesn't fit the character that well.
5.By the end, we know the car rental lady is setting him up, but as I said, it would take a while for that to register in real life. Remember when you were living a life of mayhem, and you were being set up? You didn't know it then, but in later years, when you add things up, you would know. He is lost and desperate at this point, and exasperated, and the film clearly shows this.
As for the radiator getting hot and cold, if you have ever driven old vehicles, you would know there is no explaining this. This happens all the time. Mechanics will lie and say there is always a logical explanation, but experience teaches you different.
The bad news is the scene with the cop by the billboard, which was the only true predictable Hollywood movie ingredient. It was a "groaner" that belong in an otherwise worthy movie. Since that was the only poorly written scene, I would feel it nitpicking to dwell on it.
I agree it is a good movie. I gave it 8 of 10. Anyone who didn't buy into the characters or situation is probably too young to have enough experience in real life events. Wait a few years, until after you've experienced many personal ordeals, and then watch this. You'll appreciate it more.
My compliments to everyone involved in making this movie. Don't feel bad that iI only gave it an 8. I grade tough, and reserve higher grades for the more inspirational movies. This is just a genre I don't give high grades to.
Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time
