Confused with scene at the end (spoilers)

So I am a little confused by the scene at the end. Randell and Jake were going up into the helicopter but they didn't get the captain of the ship. After Randell lets go and Jake is in the helicopter it looks as though the ship had sank?? No one ever found the body of Randell and 2 weeks later Jake rescues the captain out of the water. My question: Was the captain really waiting in the cold water for 2 weeks? Why did they not send another helicopter.
Can someone explain this to me

I dont think its the same guy! Just another rescue of a different person from a different ship 2 weeks later on, and when he told Jake the story of being helped by someone else in the water, it made jake think of Randel.

It's not the same guy. It was Randell's spirit still in the water who gave him the hope to stay alive.
