Nagging question about Kevin saving Ashton

Kevin resigned from the Coast Guard, he's packing his stuff and leaving. He hears over a radio in his car (still there from the time he was working, which was only hours or a day ago), about Ashton being stuck on the ship. He walks into the Ops room and then he's asked to go out. But he just resigned. I know it's a movie, but wouldn't the legal implecations be big, not mentioning the bad PR about Coast Guards being understaffed.

Apart from that, good movie. Would have been beter with someone else in Ashton's role (Matt Damon or even Shea La Bouef). But still, good movie.

Easy question to answer.

When a service member requests in writing to retire - as in this case, it is nothing more then a request. Coast Guard Headquarters must approve the member's retirement and assign an actual retirement date.

He did not resign.

It can take up to 6 months to process and approve a retirement. Until the approved retirement date is reached, the service member still continues to work.

I am not sure people like the coast guard rescue are that much into a legal issue when a fellow swimmer is in trouble and needs help. The legal crap is what lawyers have spawn on human's sense of conscience to profit from it.
One year ago I helped a boy on skateboard with a broken arm and I heard the father (after coming down with his wife from across the shopping center) telling me he will sue me if something happens to his son. I have had military medical help background. Most of my US friends tell me that I should have not gotten involved and yes i could get sued for it. I doubt i would stop helping a human in pain or danger because some lawyer can come up with legal ways to try to get money.

i do not care much for AK but i liked him in that role. A champ swimmer with a bit of too much humor that is going to learn the real world. MD is too cute with that idiotic smile and I cannot take SLB as a person that has become serious. He was very good in Eagle Eye, though.

did anything come of it?

in what way did you help the kid? (helped him to his feet? popped his dislocated should back in?)

My cat can eat a whole watermelon!
