Keeps the sea out of your mouth?? (and other questions) [spoilers alert]

1) The part when Kevin quits go fishing taking advice from his friend's suggestion or whatever excuses, he tosses something to Ashton, and Kevin says: "Keeps the sea out of your mouth." so what the heck is that?

2) The part where Kevin Costner went on a suicide mission jumping down from 80 / 90 ft from the air releasing his cable.... I thought he's a pro, and if the standard operating procedure says "do not take two people at one time with the cable" wouldn't he had a thought about it before going back up together? He could have waited a few mins for the cable to come back down again? Just have to be patient. Or judging from the fact that both are not really over-weight the cable should be able to hold and that the maintenance engineer failed miserably to check the wear and tear? Either way I'm not so agreeable on this scene to depict the best practise from professional coast guards... no offence though but i do think that all other countries' national coast guards should follow their high level of training standards!!

3) Does anyone ever survived from more than 90 ft high jump down to an open water? Would probably indicate that his probability of survival is high just coz he's a pro? And how much success rate is jumping down hitting a concrete? (note concrete as mentioned in the movie is just a description of comparison) Well probably broken limbs but not immediate death? Just guessing here... Coz I'm not so agreeable at the last scene where a saved boatman says: "He never lets go." is actually telling us that he's a "fisher in the sea" and that the spirit lives.... well, literally i do think he's still alive?

4) Did he really end the relationship with his doctor wife? But it's quite clear that when he shows up, the wife wants him back... but? Why the sad choice he made?

1)Ben tosses Jake a pack of gum. Gum gets rid of the seasick and height so Ben is referring to Jake that chewing gum rids gets rid of sea sick.

2)Mistakes happen in real life

3)It's up to the audience if he's alive

4)His wife hates him for putting him self in harms way and also they don't seem to see each other alot . She completely went "WTF? your quitting?" bad move for her since they separated and ready to file divorce

1. Gum like the guy above me said.

2. Remember, the wire got tangled up when he was let down, I think that is why the wire was so weak and ended up breaking. But they didn't have any other wire to replace it with, so they had to use it. So the wire should have been able to hold them both, but it failed because of the problems it had earlier.

That was my interpretations anyways.

3. I don't think the likelyhood of surviving is very high, especially since like he said, they launched one of the largest search expeditions ever, and couldn't find anything. I think it is supposed to be more of a legend, kind of like "his spirit watches over the ocean" type thing, not that he is actually alive. I mean what, is he just living in some cave with his radio listening to for any stranded people to go save? I don't think the end is supposed to imply he is actually alive.

4. And yes he ended things with his wife, he signed the divorce papers, she didn't come back because she wanted him back, she came back because he died. Just because she didn't want to be married to him anymore, doesn't mean she doesn't still care about him and isn't sad about his death.

To be specific, it was Wrigley's Spearmint Gum(as far as I could tell).
