Wouldnt you arrive to A school in uniform?

Dont you go to A School after Boot Camp? Some people dont receive job training in the CG for 6 months after boot camp. Wouldn't they have uniform by then or do you not go to A school in uniform?

It would also probably depend on how far they had to travel to arrive at A school. If your trip is more than a couple hours, they probably wouldn't have you wear your uniform.

When I went to A school, I traveled in civilian clothes.

Can't speak in detail for the Coast Guard but your statement is patently false for the Navy, and Navy/Coast Guard are set up along similar lines.

False statement:
"It's normal after boot camp to serve at least 6 months as a "non-rate" before going to A school."

MOST people going through Boot already have an assigned "A" school as part of their enlistment contract. Other than those who opt to take up to 15 days advanced leave after boot, everyone proceeds directly to "A" school.

So it is NOT normal to go 6 months prior to A.

Those who do not have an assigned "A" school as part of their enlistment go to the fleet as a non-rate true. but NORMALLY it would take a lot more than 6 months for them to earn an "A" school. More a year to two years. They have to earn it by striking for a particular rate.

The way the CG is set up I don't even think they have "Non-rates" I think they all have rates assigned upon enlistment.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

False, youre right that they wait longer if they go in as non rates but the majority of them dont go to A school after completing boot camp, unless they want a job that is undermanned, like Cook.

I tried joining the CG a year ago and found all of this out.
