In Officer and a Gentleman, Lou Gosset called Gere's character "Mayonnaise" as a play on his real name, Mayo. The writers of this script probably did a lot of cut-and-paste from that script, so they did a search-and-replace of "Goldfish" for "Mayonnaise". It's called reality. During training situations, such as basic training and the like, the instructors aren't going to give you a whole lot of respect until you show them that you deserve it. Hence, you just might end up with a nickname that you might not like. I saw this in basic and I know that others that have been through it have also experienced it.
