Why did Senior Cheif Randall call Jake 'Goldfish'?

seriously why did he nickname him that, it was really annoying. Did I miss something about Jake saying his nickname was Goldfish and he wanted to be called that, or did Senior Cheif Randall just randomly called him that cuz he felt it was appropriate?

reply

His last name was Fischer so Senior Chief Randall came up with that nickname to taunt him a little bit.

reply

when did Senior Cheif Randall say that during the movie. Maybe I missed something but it seemed like he just randomly started call him Goldfish

reply

yeah, it started pretty randomly I suppose.

reply

oh okay...

Do you need a movie to spell everything out to you?

Everyone else answered this question already, more or less. But I'd like to further clarify that his name is truncated to FISCH and he holds many records for fastest swimmer, holding breath, etc. The name is actually a taunt against his "gold medalist performance" and his last name. Ergo, Goldfish.

He does this with Hodges (I think thats his name) as well by calling him Three-peat. Because this was his third attempt at trying to pass A school.

In Officer and a Gentleman, Lou Gosset called Gere's character "Mayonnaise" as a play on his real name, Mayo. The writers of this script probably did a lot of cut-and-paste from that script, so they did a search-and-replace of "Goldfish" for "Mayonnaise". The craft of screen writing was all explained in "Get Shorty": "You just write down your ideas, then you hire some guys to fill in the periods and commas and stuff."

pretty crappy almost trollike response considering the ACTUAL answer has already been given.
His Name was Fisch, and He sought records and medals (gold medals) hence Gold + Fisch = goldfish.

Right. A movie about Hollywood is the absolute truth about how things in Hollywood actually work.

Have you ever had an original thought?

Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Tarkin: Enough of this! Vader, release him!

@ Windstaker6 - did you even watch the movie?

As someone already mentioned Jake's last name was Fischer. He was also a competitive swimmer who had won gold medals for his team.

Fischer.... gold medals... "Goldfish".

Really, what was so difficult about that?

It's called reality. During training situations, such as basic training and the like, the instructors aren't going to give you a whole lot of respect until you show them that you deserve it. Hence, you just might end up with a nickname that you might not like. I saw this in basic and I know that others that have been through it have also experienced it.
