Maybe it is because the asian culture is so alien to you - when I mean alien I mean you probably can't identify with it as much - however, I find that the asian horror films, because it is set within a unique culture, adds more to the atmosphere as well which gives it a lot of energy.
With American horror - they make some really great films. It isn't necessarily about where the film comes from, it is how it is done. This version of the Eye, was so obviously cliche and pretty much is saying to you 'oh here is a scary part - time for you to scream!'
I often find with the American remakes of the Asian horror films is that they don't know how to build up the suspense and atmosphere and rely more on cheap special effects to make it work better. The Ring remake however, built up the suspense very well and that is probably the best remake of an asian horror. The Eye and the Grudge fail in almost every respect in making me remotely scared one bit at all.
I don't mind remakes - other countries do it too so it is fine. But try to give some credibility to the source material otherwise people will always cross compare the two materials.
Also, Jessica Alba isn't a terrific actress.
