What makes this movie bad?

I watched and thought it was alright, however it seems like the large majority of people say this is a terrible movie...

I'm not saying that this is the best movie ever made or that it is better than the original, I'm just interested in hearing some opinions on what made this movie so terrible.

Two Words Are usually used when describing how "Bad" The Eye is: "Jessica Alba" and "Remake".
I don't agree with either, but that's me.

Isn't that just one word? Jessica Alba isn't a word, it's a name and if you're considering it a proper noun, it'd be 3.

 me.

Jessica Alba sucks, and made me wanna throw up! The Chinese one is far better by many miles.

i agree with everyone else aswell! LOL. I think this film would be an average film had there not had been an original. The original is 100% more creepier and I really wish americans would leave things alone, for gods sake its not difficult to read subtitles. Just to add, Jessica Alba is a pretty girl but thats about all, she is not a great actress and I thought she was terrible in this.

I disagree with everyone in the whole world :)

I think the original asian horror movies are just a total bore. The reason this movie sucks if at all, is because it's a remake of an asian horror movie. They are just too conservative and unimaginative in their thinking to really scare the living *beep* out of anyone.

I might of just missed something but didn't the remake have scenes from the original but not even explain why they were relevant?

For me this film tops the cake of crappiest Asian horror remakes.

reply

I totally agree with you.. I mean, it wasn't the best horror movie ever made, but it wasn't so bad.. it actually made me jump off my seat a couple of times.

And when it comes to remakes, I often prefer American versions rather than original ones. I haven't seen the original "The Eye" but based on my previous experiences with original Japanese/Chinese movies I don't really think I'm gonna watch it, I often don't like them. (And believe me, it's not because of the subtitles, I'm from Argentina so I'm really used to watching movies with subtitles)

reply

well, i agree, but then there are exceptions. the original in this case was better. check it out for yourself

reply

I like the movie.

reply

Me too. I just watched it tonight and thought it was pretty good. I don't really care to see the original cause guess what - that movie probably stole from others movies too.

reply

Maybe it is because the asian culture is so alien to you - when I mean alien I mean you probably can't identify with it as much - however, I find that the asian horror films, because it is set within a unique culture, adds more to the atmosphere as well which gives it a lot of energy.

With American horror - they make some really great films. It isn't necessarily about where the film comes from, it is how it is done. This version of the Eye, was so obviously cliche and pretty much is saying to you 'oh here is a scary part - time for you to scream!'

I often find with the American remakes of the Asian horror films is that they don't know how to build up the suspense and atmosphere and rely more on cheap special effects to make it work better. The Ring remake however, built up the suspense very well and that is probably the best remake of an asian horror. The Eye and the Grudge fail in almost every respect in making me remotely scared one bit at all.

I don't mind remakes - other countries do it too so it is fine. But try to give some credibility to the source material otherwise people will always cross compare the two materials.

Also, Jessica Alba isn't a terrific actress.

reply

I've seen the original and I thought this remake wasn't so bad compared to it. It wasn't the greatest movie of all time and it wasn't the worst movie of all time. The movie was enjoyable.

I thought it was a pretty good movie. One of the better remakes.

reply

Interesting how every reply criticizes the movie for being a remake and that's the only thing they go on.

OK... other than that, pretend it wasn't a remake and pretend it had someone you liked instead of Jessica Alba. What was wrong with it?

I enjoyed it.

reply

Yeah, I agree! I liked it, and thought it was pretty good! I even jumped once or twice! I want to see the original though, to compare which is better!
