Is that really how they told people if their child had died in Columbine

In the movie, they were watching the news and that's how they found out that Lauren had died. The newscasters said something like, "if you have not heard from your child, then your child is a fatality."

That would be a horrible way to find out. I can't believe that someone would not come to their house to tell them or at least call them.

Is this how it really happened?

no, the parents were called to pick up their children from Lea Elementary which was another school nearby.

The remaining parents knew that their children had been killed when all of the other families had gone. A list was also put up of the children that were killed in the shooting.

Touché Shiza!!

It's a pity when a worthwhile message gets lost because the writer can't be bothered with commas and full stops. (Or have grammar and essay-writing been removed from the school curriculum lately?)

But this is a forum about Dawn Anna, I guess, so ...

Yeah I was at Virginia Tech with the shooting. Not sure how it happened there. I know it seemed the first day, no one really knew who was dead or not. It was a lot of going off of "has anyone heard from [insert name] yet?" etc. I guess it takes a while to identify the bodies, etc. I would hope the police would notify families, although I guess it's plausible to think the media might leak it first.

I know I began finding out mostly from Facebook posts. I always thought after Columbine how awful that would have been for the families, waiting to see if their kid would be home, waiting to hear from the kid, etc...only to slowly find it they're one of the dead. Then it happens again in my own backyard. I heard with the Tech shooting, too...in the rooms with the people who were shot/dead, cell phones were going off in their backpacks and pockets like crazy, of friends/family trying to contact their loved one :(

Hyene, your comment above made me feel really sad, that little detail at the end of your post about cell phones going off around all the dead, in their pockets and backpacks. What a graphic, sad image! And now, what recently happened in Oslo and Utoya. :(
