This comes up several times in the movie - "Is Anna your last name?" but they don't explain why. The only thing I could think of is that she must have been divorced and instead of going back to her maiden name, picked her middle name instead.
Anyone know for sure?
The real Dawn Anna was divorce and I think Anna was Dawn middle name

It says repeatedly in the movie that it is her last name, which completely rules out the possibility that it is her middle name.
It was most likely her maiden name.
As for the repeated questions of why people ask if its her last name is because its general recognised as a first name - i thought that was fairly explanatory.
Look at the cast list- it says her name is Dawn Anna Townsend. She says Lauren's last name durning the movie (when she yells at her in volleyball) which is also Townsend.
