Similar Movies?

I love this movie and would love to find more that have the same indie kind of feel to it...like Donnie Darko or The Quiet. Anyone have any suggestions? I know about ghostworld and like tart, and little miss sunshine. Any others?

Thumbsucker (starring Lou Pucci of The Chumscrubber), Igby Goes Down, Hallam Foe (with Jamie Bell), The Science Of Sleep, Pan's Labyrinth, Hard Candy (Ellen Page).

"Donnie Darko" is the really obvious one that comes to mind. Anything directed by Gus Van Sant you'll enjoy, especially "Paranoid Park" (his best yet) or "Elephant" (not far behind. You should check out and Australian movie called "2:37" which I personally thought was brilliant. It's very dark and very disturing, but thematically it is similar. Then there's the really obvious ones like "Juno" and "Little Miss Sunshine", "Art School Confidential" and "Running with Scissors" are also worth a look

I'm Delightful

2:37 was filmed at my high school!! i know a few of the actors. It was so weird watching it coz theyd walk into the "library", which was actually just a corner of a teachers office with a bookshelf in there haha

it was strange. but still, i think it was a great movie.

If youre into foreign films, i highly recommend a German one called Love in Thoughts. It was amazing, i thought... Everyones really sexy too haha

Don't forget Brick!

The school in Chumscrubber is so similar looking to the school in Brick, too.

The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, Imaginary Heroes, The Squid and the Whale...

some that I suggest are
reefer madness(quite funny) v for vendetta, garden state, wristcutters a love story(one of my current favs), everything is illuminated, big fish, a clockwork orange, waking life, the science of sleep, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind(my favorite movie ever), Amelie and donnie darko,

Veronica: If I ever die, do me a favor. Go on Oprah and tell the world that I loved kittens

i think that this movie is very similar to american beauty (1999) in the way of the history and the plot glue together, and the crazy behavior from the adult side and the Ununderstood teenager.

For some reason this reminds me of the movie Charile Bartlet

"Hard Candy," while not exactly in the same genre of this film, is one of the est, very intense and terribly overlooked film. It shows Ellen Page's range as an actor. Ellen should have won the oscar for best actress in 2007, but the Oscars are such a bore and so very over rated.

Brick...Definately

reply

In the whole "Tragicomedy" genre, I can only think of a few that haven't been mentioned.
Southland Tales (follow-up from the same director as Donnie Darko, severely underrated)
House of Yes
He was a Quiet Man
I heart Huckabees
Harold
Dirty Filthy Love
Milwuakee, Minnesota
Teeth(more of a horror comedy)
Tripper (also a slasher comedy)
Fido (zombie comedy)

It reminded me of "Brick" as well. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393109/)

It's also a high school movie, with outsider, a girl, drugs, thugs, death at the beginning of the movie.

The only differences would be that in "Brick" there are no adults, although they are pretty much superficial (excessive) in this one too. And no kidnapping in the "Brick" either.

And another one, surreal peace from Luis Buñuel "Un chien andalou", (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0020530/) allegedly most shocking movie of it's time, but only for the eye scene.

"Heathers", my favourite movie when I was a teen, is a movie that The Chumscrubber made me think of. Both have a dark, hyper-real storyline and a highschool setting. Heathers is more overtly satirical in tone, tho.

reply

This movie reminded me A LOT of River's Edge with Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves and Dennis Hopper. Very similar storyline and very similar point they are trying to get across.

reply

Charlie Bartlett is kind of based on Rx and Youth in Revolt (which is what Chumscrubber reminded me of).

Larry Clark's Bully... similair movie but alot more edgy.

Pretty Persuasion... with Evan Rachel Wood. similair to American Beauty and The Quiet's dark comedy.

Wicked.... with Julia Stiles. very good little known movie.

why hasnt anyone said Garden State??? that's the best indie there is

Ghostworld is pretty cool too.

Glad to see Brick getting some recognition.. its great.

reply

Garden State was mentioned :)

More to check out:
Anything done by Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket is my personal fave), Me and You and Everyone We Know, The Ballad of Jack and Rose, King of California

and some older, well known Johnny Depp films that are great:
Edward Scissorhands, What's Eating Gilbert Grape

There are many many more. If you really like this type of movie, I would suggest getting Netflix, you'll run into a lot of movies you wouldn't normally watch. Plus, once you start watching them you'll run into actors that show up in a lot of these films..which will just lead you to more and more.

I would recommend:

Being John Malkovich, Amelie, Lymelife, Gigantic, 28 Days Later, Sideways, The Science of Sleep, United States of Leland, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Darjeeling Limited, Be Kind Rewind, Pan's Labyrinth, Shopgirl, American Beauty (of course!), I Capture the Castle, The Good Girl, Donnie Darko, Igby Goes Down, Little Miss Sunshine, Garden State, A Clockwork Orange, Vanilla Sky, Slumdog Millionaire, Adaptation, and I Heart Huckabees.

Sorry for any repeats, and not all of these are "indie" films but most of them are under the radar. Reading through the posts a lot of people had similar movie tastes as me, so I listed my favorites as suggestions.
