This just goes to show you...

I remember when this show came out last summer. FOX was just stupid to pick this up. It just goes to show you that the only rappers who should be allowed to act are Eve, Ice Cube, Ice-T, Will Smith, Andre 3000, & Queen Latifah. Beyond those six, no one else should be allowed to hit any kind of screen unless it's just for a simple guest appearance.

Destiny's Child...farewell! I love you ladies! Especially Bee!

well, i disagree i would say 2pac was an amazing actor (watch gang related for proof) as well as DMX being an established actor.

but even though i love ice t's music the man CANT act.

and i also think methodman and redman did a good job in how high.

reply

I'm sorry sweety, I'm not yet impressed w/ Andre 3000's acting yet.

reply

But when meth and red was in how high, it wasn't that bad

reply

Tupac was a good actor

reply

not funny, DMX? baaaaad actor, his best performance was Belly

Method Man? very good actor!!, Redman is solid... they should be added to the 6, but still its wrong to label people like that... so your saying rappers cant be actors? for what reason??

reply

Don't forget Marky Mark!!

In all seriousness though, that's an awfully narrow minded perspective. Don't you think it would make sense to evaluate an actor's talent on an individual basis, regardless of their other artistic works? I'd venture that a majority of people are terrible actors, not just rappers.

I think you should expand your generalization to all genres of music, not just rap. That would certainly liven up the discussion. And let's throw in professional athletes just for kicks.

Should we go the other direction too? Actors who attempt to have recording carreers?

reply

To be all honest the only rappers-turned-actors to ever impress me were Eminem, Will Smith and Ludacris. I don't count 2Pac since he actually studied drama and is more of a actor-turned-rapper (though he was known for rapping before acting). But then again, just because actors don't impress you doesn't mean that they are bad. DMX didn't exactly impress me in Cradle 2 the Grave and Romeo Must Die (I don't count Belly since that movie was too bad to notice any good performance) but he was faaaaar from bad.
Now Snoop Dogg - HE WAS BAD in both Bones and The Wash.

Queen Latifah - last few movies have sucked
Ice Cube - same
Eve - so/so
Will Smith - good rapper, better actor
Mos Def - He's good in pretty much everything he's in
Ludacris - Impressed me in Hustle & Flow and Crash, I see a bright future in acting (he should drop rapping IMO)

I can't say anything about 2Pac, since I haven't seen much of his work

reply

All of the actors/rappers you listed are great. Did you all know that Tupac went to a performing arts school? Also Mos Def was an actor first before he became an actor. :-)

What the hell are you talking about?

reply

I think LL Cool J should be on the list as well.

reply

He was on a tv show that didn't last that long when he was younger, before any of his cds came out. Nell Carter was on the show as well.

reply

What about:
LL Cool J- God (In to deep)
Snoop Dogg - Rodney (Baby Boy)
Bow Wow - (Roll Bounce) (I have a daughter dont get it twisted)
Busta Rhymes (Higher Learning)
Ludacris (hustle and Flow & Crash)
Shyheim (In to deep)

They should never let this happen again in a movie:

Christopher B. Duncan play a gang leader (O.G)

Omar Epps Play a Thug (Babyboy)

Regan Gomez-preston or Halle Berry Play a drug addict (Never Die alone/Loosing Isaah) (I still was turned on)

Ludacris and Terance howard fight each other (Hustle and Flow, Crash) Its repetitive.

and If I see one more movie with a mixed cast from: The Brothers,The wood,Two can Play that game, Brown sugar. Im moving to Hollywood to slap the S#it out of somebody

Free Larry Hoover or Lock up George Bush Whats the Diffrence? If you dont like it Kill yourself

reply

What's wrong with mixing the cast?

Where have all the good movies gone?

reply

Its the same damn people. Morris Chestnut ,Gabby Union, Mike epps,Anthony Anderson, dude from Stella, Queen Latifa, ect.

Yes my spelling Sucks, But If you dont like it Kill yourself

reply

Jamie Fox started off trying to be a Rapper/R&B Then got into stand up and now look..

Meth and Red are good actors in comedy. How High is an example of them being allowed to be them and it was a good movie. This show was stifled from it not being on a cable channel and executives doing their own thing that neither of the two wanted (the laugh track for instance). I believe if this show had originally been on Comedy Central it would have been a pretty good success.

Method was quite good in The Wire.

Method Man and Redman are good enough far as moving from rapping into acting, not the greatest, but they're much better than alot of so-called others who have done the same for much longer!

Wil Smith is hardly what we'd call a true hiphop rapper in the sense of him being anything remotely a hardcore rapper?! I like the fact he doesn't have to rap about coming from such a hard life and talking about bare violence in his life growing up, but to say he's a rapper who become the best actor implies he was the best rapper of sorts before hnd too? Not so only the best commerical performer who did hiphop as such.

Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, DMX and the late 2PAC. Were and are rappers who broke into doing other things in acting besides playing badasses all the time, although most of them or more or less still do so 95% percent of the whole time anyways. And please somebody said before 2PAC wasn't all that? Go see Juice, there's a rapper WHO CAN BLOODY ACT circles around hollywood's A-List with one hand tied behind his back, whether he did drama school or not, thats not exactly common knowledge is it? And 2PAC ability didn't diminish the fact he was a rapper who had alot of acting "Cred" while he was still alive! Moreso of rappers then or now.

Rappers like Master P and 50% Cent are hiphop artists who more or less play themselves and are honest about it in whatever roles they've played so far! Same goes for Marshall Mathers i.e. "Eminem". Mos Def is alright but has yet to do enough to warrent any true reviews of his work as of yet. The Rza mainly does soundtracks to films but yeah he's good in the occasional spots of TV and film roles that i've seen him in. I've yet to go see 'American Gangster' but i've heard he's the bomb in that flick!

Ice T and Ice Cube have fallen short in my view. Cos both were hardcore rappers who have obviously beeng doing acting for so long, that they've gone beyond just breaking out and proving themselves in acting but truly sold out who they both once were. I mean if you listened to the material Ice Cube did in the NWA, the old NWA Ice-Cube would bitch slap the current Ice-Cube who acts into orbit and thensome. Ice-T's somewhat aimless in his movie offerings as of late so that just goes without saying. But long as i look up that old film of theirs "Tresspass" i can remember a time when they both were rappers who stayed true to who they were and didn't sell out so much.

And if Queen Latifa isn't careful she'll be heading there too to join them? Have you even seen her rolls in films lately?!! DAMN what happened to her!

Ghostface Killah's alright but hasn't truly acted like all the others so he gets off. but he too is coming along. And while we're on the subject, has anyone got any love for other rappers not yet mentioned at all in this thread? Like; Xzibit, The Game, Ja Rule, Fat Joe, Nelly, P Diddy (stil Puff Daddy to some?), Nas, Raekwon and yes even R. Kelly!

Far as the OP and his comments goes. FOX was just stupid to mess around with this show that could've gone on like 'Arrested Development' Malcolm In The Middle and grown from the cheesy original aspects and been so much more than the sum of its parts. The series wasn't meant to have a laugh track at all! Why do sitcoms even have this within sitcoms today anyways? Move on from all that nonsense and let people decide for themselves what jokes to laugh at in a TV show and quit pandering down to them for almost countless bloody decades on what cheesy jokes and oneliners are actually funny to begin with.

Do yourself a favor and go lie your head down and actually listen and read the points i've raised rather than whine on about hiphop/rap (which are more or less mixed in with each other) and don't take this fine thread off topic with your weird rantings please, cos you haven't pointed out jack!

All of those "good" actors who started in the music business were given a chance. Up and coming musicians must be given that same chance when it comes to acting. To assume that no outside that short list should be allowed to act makes no sense. If we did that, then the "next" Will Smith, Queen Latifah, etc. would never be discovered.

Even though we get some screwballs, everyone who reasonably demonstrates some type of acting talent should be given an opportunity to display it. If a bad performance is the result, Hollywood will (should) make sure that their acting career is mercifully short.

reply

I agree with some of you who said rappers like Will Smith, Queen Latifah, EVE, LL Cool J, 2 Pac, Ice Cube are great rappers. I think Method Man and Redman are pretty good act acting they may not be high up their with Queen Latifah and Will Smith but they will get their. Busta Rhymes he is pretty good to I think he was amazing in Higher Learning. One more I don't think anyone mentioned is DMX when he acts, he acts I love watching him in Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, and Never Die Alone.....well most of all his movie.

The actors I think can't act are Ja Rule, The Game, T.I, 50 cent, Lil' Bow Wow, Lil' Romeo (he's alright but still needs some work) and that all I can think of. I'm not hating them for trying but you can't just be an actor or actress overnight it's going to take hard work. I think they will all grow into if they keep trying.
