I Don't Understand Why It Pisses People Off

That Movies come out that are simular to other movies. People are so quick to yell out Rip off! but so what? whats wrong with getting an idea from another movie? perhaps they didn't get the idea from the other movie at all? maybe they just put a movie out that they knew kids would like and honestly I think they succeeded. This is a good movie for kids and I think its unfair for people to hate it because of that reason.

They didn't get the idea from another movie. Jumanji is a Caldecott Medal-winning book by Chris Van Allsburg. At the end of Jumanji, the Budwing brothers, Danny and Walter, have dug up the game and are running back to their house with it. Van Allsburg drew Zathura as a sequel to Jumanji. When Zathura opens, the Budwing kids find the Zathura board wedged underneath the Jumanji board and decide to play that game instead. This time, instead of jungle animals, outer space mayhem ensues.

Some folks need to spend more time at the library!

I agree with you about this, even though the poster below states it was a sequel I do agree about this point in other movies. Yeah, so what. They could be similar but have a different setting. IF this was not a sequel, one was to do with animals and the other was to do with outer space, two different things that appeal to kids and yet still have the same kind of plot. It's still entertaining.

And the poster below did make the comment about what happens with the game. I didnt see Jumanji so I am assuming that happens at the end. However in this movie that is not what happened. Instead, Danny finds the game when he is coming up from the basement and tells his brother Walter, look what I found. He asks him to play with him and Walter refuses. He even says to himself "What is Zathura?" so it seems to be the first time he has seen it. Danny starts playing it on his own and things start happening so Walter has to start playing in order to get the game to end so all this stuff will stop.

The thing about science fiction is that there's so much of it in print and film that just about any story idea you can come up with bears similarities to other works. So the "stealing ideas" accusation can usually be used for any work.

the astronaut was supposed to be the reason the zathura board ends up in the basement, in the film version anyway, he put it there, its upoosed to be in a deleted scene but i haven't seen it

Both Jumanji and Zarthura were based on books written by the same author. (he also wrote polar express) It shouldn't surprise or bother anyone that they are similar.
